Taylor Sheridan’s Most Underrated Show, “Mayor Of Kingstown,” Renewed For 5th Season… But There’s A Catch

There’s good news and bad news for fans of Taylor Sheridan’s Mayor of Kingstown.
If you’re not familiar with the series, Mayor of Kingstown stars Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky, and follows the McLusky family in Kingstown, Michigan – a city where prison is the only real industry. Acting as the mediators between the street gangs, prisoners, guards, cops and politicians, the McLusky family battles to keep the peace in Kingstown, and has done so for decades.
Believe it or not, a press release stated that Mayor of Kingstown was the top series on Paramount+ during its third season, yet not everyone knows about it. Shows like Landman and Tulsa Kings get more attention, for whatever reason. The Renner-led show also has the lowest critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a shame because just this official synopsis for Season 4 alone would probably get even the casual TV fan to give it a shot:
“Mike’s control over Kingstown is threatened as new players compete to fill the power vacuum left in the Russians’ wake, compelling him to confront the resulting gang war and stop them from swallowing the town, meanwhile, with those he loves in more danger than ever before, Mike must contend with a headstrong new warden to protect his own while grappling with demons from his past.”
The Season 4 finale of what some call Sheridan’s most underrated show aired back on December 28. Almost immediately after it concluded, fans took to social media praising the series and hopefully wishing that it would return for a fifth season. At the time, there was no word on whether or not the show would be picked up.
So here’s where the good news and the bad news comes in.
Deadline reports that Mayor of Kingstown has officially been renewed for a fifth season, and that shouldn’t really come as a surprise. The cast additions for Season 4 really lifted Mayor of Kingstown to a whole other level. Edie Falco (The Sopranos), Lennie James (Fear The Walking Dead) and Laura Benanti (Younger) were all added to the show as series regulars for this latest season, and they did not disappoint.
The only disappointing thing is that Season 5 will be the final season of Mayor of Kingstown (this is the bad news). That does come as a little bit of a shock, since the show’s creators had previously stated that they had a “seven season plan” for Mike McLusky’s story. But they’ll be wrapping up things up a couple seasons short of that, and in a few less episodes as well. The order for Season 5 is only eight episodes, whereas Seasons 1-4 came in at 10 episodes a piece.
Though it’s a bit of a bittersweet update, fans are probably happy to hear that they’ll even get a Season 5. And it certainly seems like this could be the norm for all of the other ongoing Taylor Sheridan shows out there.
Remember, he’s set to move from Paramount to NBC Universal in a billion dollar deal at the beginning of 2029. That means there’s a good chance that most of the Sheridan shows on Paramount will be wrapped up by the end of 2028, and Mayor of Kingstown is the first series to unofficially confirm that likelihood. The post Taylor Sheridan’s Most Underrated Show, “Mayor Of Kingstown,” Renewed For 5th Season… But There’s A Catch first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
