“Officially Unwatchable”: Why Fans Are Fed Up With “Landman” Season 2

Seems as though Landman fans are losing patience with the Taylor Sheridan show.

Season 1 of the hit show – boasting a cast of Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, and Michelle Randolph, among others – took the world by storm. Viewers were excited to see the curtain pulled back on the oil industry like never before, and that interest carried over into Season 2.

The Season 2 premiere of the Taylor Sheridan show holds the title of the biggest season or series premiere ever for Paramount+. More than 9 million people viewed the first episode of the second season in the first fews days it was available on the streamer. There was a lot of hype going into the show’s sophomore run.

But now that hype is on life support.

Eight episodes out of the 10 episode season have already aired, and fans are starting to get fed up. With what, exactly? Well, it’s mainly the fact that they feel as though nothing substantive has happened. The first season was all about the ins and out of the oil industry. The second season’s focus? If you ask the internet, it’s mainly just about weird family dynamics and objectifying women (the internet’s words, not mine).

It seems as though Episode 8 of Season 2 was the last straw. As fans continue to wait for the show to “ramp up,” they instead got a storyline where Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris hired a stripper for his father (played by Sam Elliott) and told him that she was a physical therapist.

Which you can see highlighted here:

Pretty interesting stuff, eh?

To be clear, it’s not like Landman is in danger of being canceled or anything. Landman Season 3 was officially ordered and it’s already in the works, and in all likelihood, the series will go on for many more years to come (Billy Bob Thornton signed on to do the series for four or five years in his contract).

But the show better start turning things around, because fans are losing patience with the pacing of the Season 2:

Definitely wouldn’t call those glowing reviews.

But if we’re being honest, Billy Bob Thornton might have warned us about Season 2. Prior to the season’s release, Thornton was asked about the second season by Entertainment Weekly, and he described it as a “slow burn” that “ramps up” as it goes on.

Here’s the quote from Thornton, where he explains that because the world and the characters were fleshed out in the first season, the second season is able to dive a bit deeper:

“Now that the audience knows all the characters, Taylor was able to really dive into the relationships more. Last season, we had to explain what this business was all about and who the people are.

This season, he was able to really focus in the first few episodes on the family dynamic and the business dynamic. But this one really ramps up as it goes on, and there’s more and more intensity.”

So maybe things will ramp up during… the season’s final two episodes?
