Major ‘Yellowstone’ Update: Upcoming Spinoff Officially Changes Title Just Weeks Before Premiere

A surprising change for a highly anticipated Yellowstone spinoff just weeks before its premiere.
Fans of Yellowstone have their calendars marked for March 1. Why? Because on that day, Kayce Dutton will return to television screens in a series that has been marketed so far as Y: Marshals. But just under two months from the premiere, the people behind the show have decided to change the name of the spinoff.
“Tweak the name” might be the better way of putting it.
It was announced today that the series will be titled Marshals instead of Y: Marshals from here on out. Albeit a small change, it’s somewhat of a buzzer beater modification considering most of the show is likely already put together with just over seven weeks until the Luke Grimes-led series airs.
When CBS announced their 2025-2026 midseason lineup, fans were pumped to see the show formerly titled as Y: Marshals included. It will feature 13 episodes in its first season, and of course, Luke Grimes is reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. Viewers are excited to see how the youngest of the Dutton siblings once again utilizes his prior military experience as a Navy SEAL.
Based on the show’s proposed log line, it appears the series will explore his trained skillset a bit more:
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
It’s also been reported that the spinoff will focus in on Kayce Dutton being a father… and strangely, there hasn’t been any mention Kelsey Asbille’s Monica (Kayce’s wife). There’s some speculation that she won’t even be included in the show at all.
But I guess we’ll find out more about that when the first episode of the series airs in a number of weeks. CBS has confirmed that the spinoff sequel will fall into the coveted 8 E.S.T time slot. The series premiere of Marshals will go out to all Yellowstone fans on Sunday, March 1 on CBS. New episodes of the show will air in same time slot all the way through May – assuming no interruptions or mid-season breaks – until the season finale.
I personally can’t remember a show changing its name this close to its premiere, but as I previously stated, it’s not a drastic change… and it’s kind of par for the course when it comes to Yellowstone spinoffs. Another show that’s set to air in 2026 is the Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler-focused The Dutton Ranch.
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are reprising their roles, and it was back in 2025 that Hauser told Fox News that people were calling the show by the wrong name:
“Well, first of all, it’s not ‘Dutton Ranch.’ That’s not the name of it.”
And I guess he was right in saying that, because Paramount later said in an earnings call that the spinoff would be called “The Dutton Ranch.” Cole Hauser is evidently very precise with titles, and wanted to clarify that the word “The” would be included in the show’s name. Or he knows that they’ll probably change it a month or so before it comes out.
All I know is that whoever is in charge of naming these Yellowstone spinoffs really needs to start cracking down on the process, and nailing down some names much earlier in the process.
