One final single before the album drops later this week.
Gavin Adcock is gearing up to release his third studio project, and in true Gavin Adcock fashion, he’s doing things his way. Adcock has established a reputation for releasing music constantly, consistently providing his fans with a steady stream of new music.
For his upcoming record, Own Worst Enemy, which drops later this week on August 15th, he has already shared numerous singles with fans and decided to surprise them with one more before they receive the full record.
Talk about a man of the people, right? No gatekeeping songs from Gavin Adcock.
When Adcock announced Own Worst Enemy, he shared with fans that he truly is his own worst enemy at times, and addresses that feeling by writing songs that highlight his self-destructive truth and the heartbreak that comes with it.
“Over the last four years, I’ve spent my life writing, traveling, and trying to find time to breathe. It doesn’t always add up on paper like it would seem, but through the happiness, hard times, and self-destruction, I’ve found that the best part of my job is letting out music for my fans. I can’t thank y’all enough for sticking with me for this long. I’m the furthest thing from perfect, and I don’t ever plan to be.
My inspiration for my new album comes from personal experiences and experiences of people around me. I interact with a bunch of different people, and I get to see their side of their life story as well. I just try to take inspiration from real-life things and real-life situations that have brought me to today.”
“Light A Fire” appears to highlight that rock bottom feeling of losing someone you love so deeply, but your mistakes drove them away. But a fiery anger takes off, and Adcock comes to his senses, realizing that maybe this love was not as great as his memory recalled. Penned by Adcock, Jack Rauton, and Brad Clawson, and produced by Jay Rodgers, “Light A Fire” begins with a softer melody, as if Adcock is warning his fans of a terrifying heartbreak, wallowing in self-pity as he sits by a bonfire, mourning the loss of the relationship.
“Listen to the hum of that kerosene choir dancing off dry oak
It’s just me and the dogs out here trying to stay out the way of the smoke
She left the ring of gold on top of the note
Said I should know, she had to go
Whoa, buddy, that’s all she wrote”
As the song progresses, the melody intensifies, with electric guitar riffs taking over as he has a turning point realization that this was not the woman for him. The fire that Adcock sits by at the start of the tune grows as he begins to throw this woman’s memories (and seemingly some physical belongings) in there, literally and metaphorically lighting a fire under him to move on.
“Now she’s driving, driving, driving me out of my mind
It’s too damn quiet, you’re flying for the first time in a while
But it’s good timing, because I’ve been getting her shit in a pile
When love leaves you that cold, sometimes you’ve gotta light a fire, gotta light a fire..”
Adcock delivered the perfect mid-week pick-me-up with the release of this song. I can’t wait to hear the rest of Own Worst Enemy later this week.
Turn it up.
