The Mike Gundy era at Oklahoma State could very well be coming to an end. After the Cowboys went 3-9 last year and finished dead last in the Big 12, fans of Oklahoma State were expecting a major bounce-back in 2025. And considering Gundy has been with the program since 2005, and boasts a very respectable 170-89 record all-time (18 winning seasons since he took over), it wasn’t out of the norm to think that Mike Gundy would get the train back on the tracks.
But boy, oh boy was last week’s loss a train wreck.
It all started when Mike Gundy called out his then upcoming opponent, the Oregon Ducks, saying that they spent too much money building their roster. Admittedly, there is a large gap between the money spent on Oklahoma State’s roster and Oregon’s, but Ducks head coach Dan Lanning wasn’t having it.
He fired back with this quote a couple of days before the game:
“We spend to win. Some people save to have an excuse.”
And you know how I mentioned large gaps just a second ago? Well the difference in money spent between the two teams basically equated the points differential that presented itself in the blowout win for Oregon over Oklahoma State.
After opening the season with a cupcake game against UT Martin, the Cowboys got utterly embarrassed on the road against Oregon, losing 69 to 3 against the team that Mike Gundy had previously criticized for spending too much money.
So after last season’s troubles, and this current season’s rough start, some Oklahoma State fans have seen all that they need to see.
Though Gundy is under contract to remain as the head coach at Oklahoma State until 2028, one fan has taken it upon his or herself to rally the troops and raise money to… get Mike Gundy fired. Often times, the staggering buyout that colleges would have to pay to get a coach to leave keeps the coaches around a little longer than they should be.
This person is trying to take that worry out of the equation, and started a GoFundMe that’s titled “Buyout Mike Gundy’s Contract.” They have the goal set at $7 million, and are trying to convince other fans that they could help out for the price that they’d pay for a ticket to go to the game:
“We are raising the necessary funds to buy out Mike Gundy’s contract. If our leadership and donor class are unwilling to step up, we the people will.
We can collectively accomplish this goal. The math is $7,000,000 divided by the number of fans in attendance at an OSU game (60,000), which comes to $116.67 per fan. So, for less than the price of a typical game ticket, we can change the landscape of OSU football!”
The only issue is that Gundy’s buyout would be much more than $7 million. It’s actually double that – around $15 million. If they waited until the end of this season, it would drop down to $10 million (closer to the goal of the GoFundMe). All in all, you’ve got to love college football. What other sport would fans band together to try and raise money to oust someone out of their head coaching job?
It’ll be a sad day when Mike Gundy gets canned… but the good news is that he’ll always have his, ‘I’m a man, I’m 40″ rant to fall back on (he just recently spoofed it, in case you missed it):
