FOOTBALL IS BACK, BABY! But after the first week of games, fans are getting used to a significant change in their NFL Sunday routine: commercials on NFL RedZone.

Ahead of the season, fans started to get concerned when they found out that ESPN had acquired the NFL Network, which produces NFL RedZone, in a deal that gave the National Football League a 10% ownership stake in the sports network. NFL RedZone floated the idea of commercials being plugged into the former commercial-less program late last season, and even started testing out the inclusion of ads in the last couple of weeks of RedZone. And during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, RedZone host Scott Hanson hinted that there might be commercials on the network this season – and promised fans that he had no say in the matter:

“When it comes to what’s on RedZone, there is no one on the planet who wants to show you more football than I do. I guarantee it. And I hope people can understand that. So everyone who dives in my mentions to be like, ‘Why are you putting commercials on RedZone?’ That’s not my pay grade.

There are people who can answer that question, and they’re not sitting in this chair right now. I host, they do the business. But I’ll tell you this, no matter what hand I’m dealt or we’re dealt, I’m going to give you the best experience that I possibly can.”

Football fans’ worst nightmares came true when it was announced that commercials would be coming to NFL RedZone for the 2025 season, bringing to an end the “seven hours of commercial-free football” that attracted viewers to the channel in the first place. However, it was quickly clarified to fans that commercials would not be like traditional TV advertisements, with ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter clarifying that ads will be shown in 15-second increments, creating 1-2 minutes of commercial time over the seven-hour broadcast.

“Some added clarity: NFL RedZone is seven hours — 420 minutes. Over that time, viewers will be served 1-2 total minutes of ads in :15 increments. This comes out to anywhere between 0.25% – 0.5% of the total time, considerably less than other sports/entertainment programs.”

However, the overall concern now is that the total commercial time will increase week by week, soon occupying most of the broadcast. While it’s a big change, fans are still tuning into the program and are rolling with the punches when it comes to this major change.

After this week’s NFL Sunday, the online sports gambling company FanDuel shared a graphic showing the total amount of commercials aired during the broadcast, proving that RedZone kept its promise of limited commercials and fell right in line with Schefter’s statement. The caption of the post read:

“RedZone commercials ???????????????????????? ???? ???????????????????????? in total.”

Making it very clear what the graphic is referencing. However, the graphic itself only features an image of host Scott Hanson with the verbiage “lasted 1 minute.”

Yikes. If you’re mind’s in the gutter, you’re right there with everyone else on the internet.

Needless to say, it did not take long for this graphic to go viral, with the internet questioning who approved the use of this phrase alone. Of course, with the caption, more context is given, but the eye is naturally drawn to the graphic alone, making the suggestion that Hanson was doing some NSFW activities.

Maybe add a little more to this graphic for the next NFL Sunday. If, for some reason, this was intentional, thank you for giving me a good belly laugh. I can only imagine that Hanson was less than thrilled, seeing that he was trending online from this post.
