Ever heard some of country music’s biggest songs in the stylings of Alvin and the Chipmunks?
If you haven’t, that must mean that the membrane of your ear drum is still intact. For those that have heard Chipmunks In Low Places, you likely either a) look back on the record very fondly or b) wish that it never existed in the first place. Squeaky voices and country music don’t exactly mix, but Alvin and the Chipmunks still made it work with their 1992 album that featured both covers and original material.
The album features some of the biggest country music songs at the time, including Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart” and Alan Jackson’s “Don’t Rock The Jukebox.” There were even a handful of country music legends that were featured on the album, including Charlie Daniels, Waylon Jennings, and Tammy Wynette. And that brings me to my one true gripe about the project…
They didn’t even get “Friends In Low Places” on the album. How do you go with the name Chipmunks in Low Places if you can’t secure a Garth Brooks cover? If history tells us anything about Garth Brooks’ selective nature with his music, the country music superstar was likely asked to have his hit song included on the album and refused to hand over recording rights.
I’m starting the rumor right now… Garth Brooks probably denied Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Anyways, there’s a storyline that actually feeds through the entire album, and if you listen (God bless you if you are brave enough to), you’ll even hear Alvin get into verbal arguments with some of country music’s biggest names. And I know I’m giving the project a hard time, but it performed incredibly well at the time.
Chipmunks in Low Places is certified Platinum by RIAA, which marked the group’s first ever platinum record, and in turn was also the Chipmunks’ highest selling album. It peaked as high as No. 6 on the Billboard Top Country albums chart, and I figure that’s because it did pack some star power within it:
“Achy Breaky Heart” feat. Billy Ray Cyrus
“Stand By Your Man” feat. Tammy Wynette
“Don’t Rock The Jukebox” feat. Alan Jackson
“Outlaws” feat. Waylon Jennings
The album wraps up with an original song by Alvin and the Chipmunks called “I Ain’t No Dang Cartoon.” It’s a real stick-it-to-ya type of track, and it was even accompanied by this music video. Guess you could call this Alvin and the Chipmunk’s outlaw anthem?
“I Ain’t No Dang Cartoon”
