Renowned DJ and electronic music producer Damian Lazarus has announced the tragic death of his ex-wife Zoë, who passed away peacefully Tuesday night in a London hospice after battling an aggressive rare form of cancer.
In a deeply personal social media statement, Lazarus reflected on their enduring connection and her inspiring life in the music industry, revealing that Zoë had lost both parents to cancer at a young age and always knew she carried the same genetic risk.
The couple’s love story began in the late-90s, when they met while working at music publications, Zoë at Phuture Trax and Damian at Dazed & Confused. Together, they launched a club in Shoreditch and performed as DJ duo PM Scientists. Zoë also cut her teeth as a music producer, notably remixing a track by her “heroes,” the German experimental rock band Can.
After their 2004 wedding celebration at London’s Great Eastern Hotel, which featured sets by Soulwax, Rob Mello and Jonny Rock, the couple honeymooned in Thailand, where they “drank mushroom milkshakes and ventured out to full moon trance raves.” By 2008, they had transitioned from romantic partners to lifelong friends.
“Love takes many forms and we were intelligent enough to recognise how our love for each other should roll out for the rest of our lives,” Lazarus wrote. “You go through different phases in life with a soul mate and now she is gone.”
Zoë, who later became a venerated trend forecaster for major global advertising agencies, announced in March 2023 that she was in recovery after a stint at University College London Hospitals’ T7 South ward, a women’s health unit providing care for patients undergoing gynecological surgery. She called this period her “darkest hours” at the time, but was elated to be on the mend, consistently sharing updates on her healing.
“She refused to let the disease get the better of her,” Damian added. “At Glastonbury we laughed so much and she danced through the night, we all knew she wasn’t in good shape but no one dared stop her. In hindsight I believe she knew it was her last dance.”
