DJ Climbs Nearly 9,000 Feet to Spin First-Ever Set On Yosemite’s Half Dome

When most people climb Yosemite’s Half Dome, they bring trail mix, trekking poles and maybe a GoPro. San Francisco-based DJ and producer HABITAAT instead packed his DJ setup.
With the help of his twin brother Tyson, HABITAAT, whose real name is Tomas Wischerath, woke up at 4am and hauled his rig 8,800 feet up the granite monolith to record what he claims is the first-ever DJ set atop Half Dome. The mountaintop performance, now streaming on YouTube, was achieved without speakers or amplification, a deliberate decision made to preserve the tranquility of one of America’s most iconic national parks.
The idea struck him mid-flight while returning from a previous gig, as he peered down at Yosemite’s sculpted landscape from above.
“Half Dome is one of the most iconic summits in the world, and the idea of playing a set there felt like a way to connect with the land, and also spark conversation about protecting these spaces,” Wischerath told the San Francisco Chronicle.
The 38-minute set threads ambient textures and grooving downtempo rhythms with the natural ambiance of Yosemite Valley, mirroring Habitaat’s broader artistic ethos. A behind-the-scenes video of the climb and recording process is expected to be released in the days ahead, offering a deeper look at the physical and creative effort behind the ambitious summit session.
