A college band announcer is under fire for “body shaming” an opposing school’s dance team during a game over the weekend, with both schools issuing statements condemning the remarks.
On Saturday, Alabama State traveled to Florida A&M to take on the Rattlers at Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee. And they brought along not only their band but also their popular “plus-sized dance team,” the Honey Beez.
But while introducing the home band, longtime band announcer Joe Bullard decided to take an unnecessary shot at the ladies on the opposing dance team:
“Congratulate them, they’re now the new face of Ozempic.”

As you can hear, there were immediate groans from the crowd who thought that Bullard’s comments went too far. And both schools quickly issued statements condemning the distasteful remarks.
Immediately after the game, FAMU President Marva Johnson apologized to Alabama State and the Honey Beez:
“During the halftime of the Florida A&M University vs. Alabama State University football game, an inappropriate and offensive remark was made by a Marching 100 announcer. On behalf of Florida A&M University, I extend my deepest and sincerest apologies to the Honey Beez, the Mighty Marching Hornets, President Quinton Ross, and the entire Alabama State University community.”
Johnson also said the university would be taking steps to hold Bullard accountable and affirm that comments like that are unacceptable.
And Alabama State University President Quinton Ross issued his own statement calling the comments “demeaning” and “short-sighted.”
“Today, during the halftime show of the Alabama State University vs. Florida A&M football game, distasteful comments were made regarding our beloved Honey Beez. While we recognize the spirit of competition, there is no place for disparaging or demeaning remarks directed at our scholars.
I have personally spoken with the President of Florida A&M University and with the Commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference to express my displeasure with these short-sighted comments, and they have both affirmed their agreement with my sentiments.
The Honey Beez, along with the Mighty Marching Hornets, dedicate countless hours to their craft to deliver the unforgettable, show-stopping performances that embody the pride and excellence of Alabama State University. To have their artistry disrespected after such a performance is absolutely unacceptable.
As President of this great institution, I stand firmly with the Honey Beez, the Mighty Marching Hornets, and our entire student body. Honey Beez, please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy you bring to the Hornet Nation, and also for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU. Continue to shine, because your light cannot be dimmed by negativity.”
It hasn’t been announced what kind of discipline Bullard will face, but you’ve gotta remember that most of these girls on the dance team are still teenagers, and they’re all college students who are just out there to entertain people. I was in the marching band in college so I know just how much work the band and dance team put in, not to compete with anybody but to help everybody else have a good time.
No place for comments like that, especially about how a group of young girls look. The post College Announcer Under Fire For Calling Opposing School’s Dance Team “The New Face Of Ozempic” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
