A new one from the pride of West Virginia, Charles Wesley Godwin.

It’s been nearly two years since the West Virginia native released his highly regarded Family Ties album, his first on Big Loud. Although, some might argue that How The Mighty Fall was his big break, when he really started stealing the spotlight. However, he’s captured our hearts ever since Seneca dropped in 2019, and has only gotten better ever since. For my money, he’s one of the absolute best in the business.

Earlier this summer, Godwin announced another project, which was more of a passion project but brought some of his older hits to the light for new fans. CWG announced “The Hometown Sessions,” which not only reimagined some of their popular tunes like “All Again” and “Strawberry Queen,” but also a cover of the legendary Tyler Chilies tune “Whitehouse Road.”

And it appears that CWG is on a roll for releasing music this year, following up “The Hometown Sessions,” by teasing a new track titled “Better That Way.”

On August 3rd, Godwin took to social media to share a brand new piece that he had just finished writing, alongside two other poetic storytellers, Scooter Carusoe and Al Torrence.

“Straight out of the notebook. Wrote this one with Scooter Carusoe and Al Torrence last week. Enjoy!”

Godwin highlights simple things in life that make him a better person, or the best version of himself. It could be as small as calling his mother, to honoring your grandparents by wearing an old greased-up trucker hat that was once theirs. It almost gives a feel of “It’s The Little Things,” listing off small joys in life that you often take for granted, but “Better That Way” reflects on the thing that makes this narrator the best version of himself- the steady love of his woman. In the chorus, CWG sings about loving things that get better with time, like a good pair of jeans getting worn in, and one of those things is the privilege he’s had of loving the same woman since 23.

“I’m better
When my jeans have lost ’bout half their blue
I’m better
When the work on the farm is done by noon
Better,
When her eyes of green are looking back at me
Fell in love at 23, are still mine to this day
Yeah, I’m just better that way…”

Man, Charles Wesley Godwin does not miss. It did not take long for CWG fans to fill the comments section begging him to drop this track sooner rather than later.

“I’m calling the cops if I don’t open Spotify and see this in 6 seconds.”

“Begging you to release now. I needed this like yesterday.”

“The lyrics are unreal.”

“I will die if this isn’t released right now.”

“Jeeeee, this one hit hard.”

I’m seconding all of these comments. “Better That Way” is the kind of cut that many people can relate to. I hope we get this one sooner rather than later. Don’t let us down, CWG.The post Charles Wesley Godwin Previews Brand New Song, “Better That Way,” & Leaves Fans Begging For It first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
