Mama, he’s coming home.

Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness, died at the age of 76. Osbourne’s family shared a statement with fans and the public, stating that the “Crazy Train” singer took his final breaths surrounded by family.

“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family’s privacy at this time.

Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.”

Earlier this month, Osbourne played a final show, performing five songs with his Black Sabbath bandmates, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and Bill Ward. While fans were sad to see Osbourne on stage for the final time, the rockstar’s health had been deteriorating rapidly due to his Parkinson’s disease.

Rest in peace to one of the greatest rock and roll legends.

While Ozzy created a loyal fan base, a few of his fans ventured into other genres when pursuing their careers in music. One of those fans is the “All-American Girl” singer, Carrie Underwood. Many country fans know that Underwood is a big fan of classic rock, often delivering covers of iconic songs at her shows.

In 2023, Underwood appeared on the Howard Stern show and delivered a truly perfect cover of “Mama, I’m Coming Home,” which went viral again after Ozzy’s final performance. However, she also opened up about how she became a fan of Osbourne. The conversation begins with Stern and Underwood expressing their love for his music.

“I very much remember being a teenager, kind of discovering my own musical tastes, and my mom being very much against me listening to Ozzy.”

Stern chuckled and responded:

“Which makes it so cool, right? That’s why you like it.”

Underwood agreed and continued:

“But I was also like ‘I feel like you need to listen to some of these lyrics,’ because it’s not all darkness… Yes, there’s a lot of love songs and things that are a lot more melodic and sweet.”

Stern jokes that his songs are not all “biting the head off of a bat,” which is probably one of the most famed wild Ozzy Osbourne stories, and then the two go back to discussing how much the country music star admires the Prince of Darkness. Carrie Underwood shares that his voice is very distinct and praises him for his gift and natural ability, given that he rose to fame in a time before modern-day recording technology.

Underwood also shared during this interview, before diving into the performance aspect, that she had asked Sharon for permission to cover the tune. Respect.

“Anytime I’m going to cover somebody, I want their blessing. I would never want somebody to be like, ‘Man, I don’t like her.’ It’s worse if you sing the song and then somebody asks them about that and they’re like, ‘What was that?’ You know?

So I just want to be respectful, and we had asked permission. Sharon was very sweet about it.”

Respect.

Carrie Underwood’s cover of “Mama, I’m Coming Home” is sensational. Turn it all the way up in honor of Ozzy Osbourne.
