How do you begin to explain something like that to an innocent child?
In the aftermath of the horrific assassination of conservative media star Charlie Kirk on Wednesday, much of the attention has rightfully been on his wife, Erika, and their two small children. The couple had a 1-year old son and a 3-year old daughter who are now going to grow up without their father because somebody didn’t agree with his politics, which is something that should be unthinkable in the United States of America, but for those children it’s unfortunately their new heartbreaking reality.
Across the country music world, several artists have spoken about Charlie during their shows since his murder, and Justin Moore took time last night while headlining the Hop Country Music Fest in Yakima, Washington to honor Kirk and his family.
While dedicating his emotional hit “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” to the Kirk family, Justin became visibly emotional as he reflected as a father on what Erika and her children are going through:
“I wanna send this next song out to the Kirk family. I regret that I never had the opportunity to meet Charlie or his family. But I don’t care which side of the aisle you’re on. It’s just a tragic, tragic deal. It just shouldn’t happen. It just shouldn’t happen.
And as my wife and I – we just celebrated 23 years together and we have four kids. I cannot imagine the questions that she’s having to answer to a 3 and a 1-year-old. It just breaks my heart.”
Justin has never been shy about expressing his political beliefs as a conservative, but he says that even more than politically, Charlie was an inspiration for his unwavering faith:
“I’m a conservative. There’s no secret there. I tend to agree with much of what Charlie said and stood for. But, politics aside, I also, more importantly to me anyway, he was an inspiration to me, even though he was 10, 12 years younger than me. He was an inspiration to me to be a better father and a better husband. And most importantly to me at least, to be a better Christian.”
But as Justin says, knowing that Charlie was such a strong Christian is at least some source of comfort in such a horrific time:
“I promise you though, he is at the right hand of Jesus right now. And we ain’t, so he’s got it better than all of us do, I promise you. Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done…
God bless him and the life he led. And I’m sure his legacy will live on and on and on. I sure hope so.
We’ll send this out to his family tonight. I’m sure they’ll never see this, but if they happen to run across it on YouTube or something, I hope they know that their husband and their dad and all his friends and family, they had a hell of a fan in me, I promise you.”
