This mother bear is getting an early start on the summer pool season.

With as hot as humid as it can get in the month of May, I don’t blame this mother black bear and her cub one bit. Luckily for them, bears can pretty much do whatever they want since no human in their right mind is going to step in between them and a fresh, temperature controlled pool.

That’s why this mother bear was showing her little cub the ropes, and by the “ropes,” I mean trespassing onto private property to take a plunge into a California homeowner’s above-ground swimming pool. The mama bear went about it like she had done so one hundred times before. There’s a good chance she’s been visiting this pool long before her cubs were even alive.

When the viral video first picked up, the tiny little baby bear was swimming along the edge waiting for further instruction from her parent. The mother bear was staying close by, almost as if she was encouraging her cub and allowing for it to learn how to swim. And the little creature that looks to be barely over a foot long was certainly holding its own… but didn’t fight too much when its mother scooped it out of the water.

Once the cub was resting on the side of the pool, the mother bear decided to jump right in to cool off a bit. Her cub stayed pool side initially, despite the mother bear doing her best to invite her offspring back into the water. The poor petite bear was evidently tuckered out after it took a dip in the pool. It can be seen in the video below gripping the side and catching its breath.

And the mother bear was clearly trying to tempt the cub to jump back in, but wasn’t going to let its indecisiveness ruin her pool day. As long as she had the small animal within her eyesight, all was well. It appears that the mother bear was able to stand up in body of water rather comfortably, and could get a good look around the California backyard if she needed to.

But all signs pointed towards the small cub not moving a muscle after its swim lesson. That could have been the mother’s plan all along. Parents reading probably know how valuable a trip to the pool can be to tucker out the young ones, and I’d say this mother bear was very much aware of that.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t shoutout the mother bear’s tight rope walking skills. It’s almost hard to believe that this is an above-ground pool watching the bear casually walk the line and not look even the slightest bit concerned about it. I suppose having the cool, slightly-green pool water on one side to fall into acted as a little bit of a safety net for the sizable bear.

It’s a great video capturing a swim lesson out in the wild, and it was all recorded on camera (safely) by a California homeowner:
