How can I tell Bill Murray and Darius Rucker are good friends? You have to be rather close with someone to poke fun at their golf game.
Golf is one of those sports, or hobbies, that’s endlessly frustrating. The more time you spend doing something, the better you should be at it, right? Well that’s not exactly the case for the sport that was named “golf” because “all of the other four letter words were taken.”
But golf does bring people together, and it seems as though it brought legendary actor and comedian Bill Murray and country music artists Darius Rucker.
Recently, the two were both featured on the same billing at Charleston, South Carolina’s Riverfront Revival. Rucker was the Saturday headliner, and “Bill Murray and his Blood Brothers” were a special guest during the festival:
Pretty stacked festival right there… you got to see all of those country music stars and you got to see comedy legend Bill Murray (playing with his thrown-together rock and blues group).
During some down time while the festival was ongoing, Murray and Rucker spoke with the festival’s media team. They were asked who the better golfer was between the two of them, and Darius Rucker first answered by saying this:
“You’re pretty good, but I’m okay.”
Darius was tryin to give credit to both of them with his answer. Truth is, Darius Rucker is a damn good golfer.
Bill Murray, on the other hand, decided to be very frank and transparent with his answer. He gave credit where credit was due… but basically said during the interview that Darius Rucker used to suck at golf, and it made for quite the comical moment.
That being said, Murray came around at the end and admitted that Darius has some game:
“He did not used to be. He used to be an ‘exciting’ golfer. That’s the term we’ll choose to say. He used to be an ‘exciting’ golfer. But he’s played a lot of golf because he’s a professional musician. He’s gotten to really play. And I couldn’t believe it when I played with him at a place where, formerly, I spent a lot of time taking burrs and ticks off of my body looking for his ball. But suddenly, he shot like 75 that day.”
You don’t ever want to be called an “exciting” golfer.
After that answer, Bill Murray went on to concede that Darius Rucker is probably the better golfer… at least for right now. And he didn’t let the “Alright” singer have all the spotlight. Bill added that just last weekend, he played one of the most historic golf courses in the world and fired a smooth three-over-par:
“He’s a better golfer right now, but I want you to know I shot 75 at the old course last Sunday.”
Wouldn’t that be fun to get paired up with Darius Rucker and Bill Murray on the golf course?
From what it sounds like, it’s tough to know who the better golfer between the two is.
All I really do know is that I never get tired of watching Bill Murray on the golf course, and the public usually gets that chance at least once a year when he plays in the Pro-Am at Pebble Beach:
