Auburn Head Coach, Hugh Freeze, Becomes An Instant Meme Talking About What It Takes To Play Football In The SEC

College football is BACK.

Typically, I reserve declaring that for when I feel that first, brisk breeze of Fall that rolls in at the end of August and early September. That’s when I pull a George Costanza and tell everyone that I’ve got to focus… because I’m “shifting into football mode.” But thanks to Auburn Tiger Head Coach Hugh Freeze, I’m announcing the return of football a little earlier this year.

College football fans usually have to wait a little bit into the season to get a gridiron quote that is this good. Hugh Freeze, who has coached at Auburn since 2022, apparently got up this morning and decided that he was going to give an interview that wraps up “Quote of the Year” before the year even really gets going.

Freeze addressed the media about the start of Auburn’s fall camp earlier today, and it was business as usual until about 25 minutes into his time with the press, when he was asked about the size of the running backs that he has on the roster. Every running back that is currently a member of the Auburn Tigers is over 200 pounds, and a reporter noticed that and asked if that was intentional.

Hugh Freeze proceeded to literally say this out loud:

“You need length and girth in this league.”

Oh boy…

Now there’s no doubt that teams playing in the SEC need size to compete with the rest of the league. Auburn especially so, considering they went a measly 5-7 last year, and only won two of their conference games (they lost their other six). But did Hugh Freeze have to say it like that? Where it truly feels like the clip should come with a NSFW signifier?

Obviously, Freeze’s reply to that question was more than just those eight words. That’s just how the internet works… what’s clip-able, and what could go viral? The Auburn head coach saying something about length and girth is certainly something to single out, but here’s his full quote from his presser:

“I don’t really get hung up on the running back’s weight, but it is good to have some that have some girth to them. There’s no doubt that you need length and girth in this league… upfront. And at linebacker too. It helps if you have it in the secondary. I tell guys all the time when they’re recruiting these guys from an offensive perspective… length matters. On both sides.”

See? It helps to have some context.

Does it make it any better that he said length and girth in the same sentence? No, it does not. But the way I see it… a college football coach going viral for saying something that could only be described as “accidentally sexual” just means that the college football season is right around the corner. And no matter how you draw this up, I’d say that’s a good thing.

Here’s his full time with the media in case you wanted to check it out… and hear him talk about length and girth:
