Arsenal are wasting no time in strengthening their squad for the new season, with The Independent reporting that Viktor Gyokeres is set to fly to Singapore for a medical ahead of a big-money move to North London.
The Swedish striker will soon be announced, as will the arrival of centre-back Cristhian Mosquera, who has already completed his medical.
The addition of Gyokeres marks a significant boost to Mikel Arteta’s attacking options. The 27-year-old has been on Arsenal’s radar for months, and landing him early in pre-season is a major win for Andrea Berta, who is overseeing transfer activity following his recent appointment. With Gyokeres joining up with the squad during their tour of Asia, he’ll have valuable time to integrate into the system and gel with his new teammates ahead of the Premier League opener.
There had been a stall in negotiations over the last week, but a deal was always close. David Ornstein revealed earlier today that finally there had been a breakthrough and the deal is now all but done subject to a medical.
Although neither Gyokeres nor Mosquera will be available for Arsenal’s friendly against AC Milan on Wednesday, both could make their unofficial debuts on Sunday against Newcastle. Their arrivals reflect the club’s clear ambition to go one better than last season and finally secure the Premier League title that has narrowly eluded them.
It’s so good that Arsenal have managed to seal the deal for Gyokeres early in pre-season, allowing him to integrate early in the process and be ready to hit the ground running when the season starts. His physicality, link-up play and goal threat could be the missing piece in an attack that already boasts the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Kai Havertz.
With two signings now through the door, attention turns to the outgoings. Arsenal’s squad remains bloated in some areas, and Berta now needs to crack on with some sales to free space for potentially more signings. Several fringe players could be moved on in the coming weeks as Arsenal continue to reshape the squad into one capable of delivering silverware.
