Army Football Player, Larry Pickett Jr., Pulled Stranger From Car Crash Hours After Army’s First Game Of The Season

The embodiment of “Army Strong.”

One day after the Army football team suffered a tough loss to open their season, sophomore safety Larry Pickett Jr. pulled a stranger to safety after they crashed their vehicle. Pickett Jr. and his family were heading back from dinner this past Saturday night near Fort Montgomery (close to West Point, New York) when they witnessed a vehicle – crashed and hung up in downed power lines – off the side of the road.

Obviously, downed electrical lines are potentially life-threatening as it is. Adding that on top of the car crash made for quite the scary and dangerous situation… but it wasn’t enough to keep the Army football player and his father from rushing into action.

They pulled their vehicle over and quickly accessed the situation. Though first responders were on their way, there was some concern with the car catching fire. Pickett Jr. and his father knew that the driver of the wrecked vehicle could be in grave danger, so they risked their own lives and carefully worked towards getting the injured man out and away from his car.

Larry Pickett Sr. told WTVD that there was never a plan B in their minds, and that his son was the one that really set the wheels in motion:

“There was no discussion. My son just jumped right into action. He mentioned his military training kicked in, and we pulled him out. He took care of him on the side of the road until the police officers got there. And then the fire department got there shortly after. It’s just amazing to see him in action. And it’s just not surprising because we’ve watched him his whole life do amazing things.”

The army football player and his father were successfully able to remove the person from the car just minutes before it burst into flames, and it was all caught on breathtaking video. I’d say that Larry Pickett Jr. is the perfect fit for Army, considering he put someone else’s life before his own. If he and his father wouldn’t have helped when they did, this story could have a far different ending.

Now, the Army sophomore safety is being commended for his actions online (as he should be). Many are taking to social media to applaud the Picketts for being selfless and stopping dead in their tracks to help keep a stranger alive. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point shared this nice message highlighting the heroics of the young Army football player and his father:

“We’re proud of the heroic actions taken Saturday night by Cadet Larry Pickett Jr, a second-year cadet and Army football player, and his father who are seen pulling a driver to safety in a video online taken by the family. Their actions are the embodiment of the United States Army’s values.”

Salute to you Larry Pickett Jr. (and Larry Pickett Sr.) for being a real life hero.
