American Eagle finally addresses the “Sydney Sweeney Has Good Jeans” backlash.
If you ask me, this controversy that’s blown up in the past couple of weeks might be one the silliest, non-sensical internet outrage storms I’ve ever seen. Basically, clothing outfitter American Eagle called upon actress Sydney Sweeney to be a celebrity spokesperson for their jeans. Because the 27-year-old actress is conventionally attractive, the company decided to use a play on words (jeans and genes) to say that Sweeney has good jeans.
Here it is in case you missed it:
American Eagle’s ad campaign was obviously meant to be lighthearted, and harken the older media practice of having someone pretty and famous promote a product. Genius, right? And all it is is wordplay… Sydney Sweeney has good genes (qualities passed down from her parents), and good jeans – the one’s she’s helping sell that American Eagle produces.
But people online started claiming that the advertisements promote white supremacy, eugenics and, wait for it…. Nazism. Yes, American Eagle are pro-Nazi for putting an all-American blonde bombshell like Sydney in a jeans commercial.
To be clear, I’m not even going to attempt to unpack that. It’s a stretch if I’ve ever seen one… just like the stretchiness that American Eagle jeans offer (that’s right, I own a couple of pairs of jeans from there myself). All the clothing company was trying to do was a) produce a clever ad and b) use Sydney Sweeney, who seems like she’s in almost everything in the modern era of TV and film, to do so.
Why wouldn’t they try to capitalize on her popularity? She’s quite the talented actress, and has undoubtedly brought some attention to American Eagle’s clothing… even before this whole controversy broke out. And American Eagle isn’t backing down in the face of the backlash.
They put out this statement saying they are standing by their ad campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney, and God bless ’em for not bending the knee to this insanity.
“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Love that they didn’t even address the reason why people have been getting upset. … because they DON’T NEED TO.
And in no surprise at all, since this is 2025 we’re living in, the American Eagle controversy has gotten political. Vice President J.D. Vance recently ripped Democrats – or at least Democratic-minded people – for attacking Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle jeans commercial:
“My political advice to the Democrats is continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi. That appears to be their actual strategy. I mean, it actually reveals something pretty interesting about the Dems, though, which is that you have, like, a normal all-American beautiful girl doing like a normal jeans ad, right? They’re trying to sell, you know, sell jeans to kids in America and they have managed to so unhinge themselves over this thing…
I actually thought that one of the lessons (Democrats) might take is we’re going to be less crazy. And the lesson they have apparently taken is we’re going to attack people as Nazis for thinking Sydney Sweeney is beautiful. Great strategy, guys. That’s how you’re going to win the midterm, especially young American men. So much of the Democrats is oriented around hostility to basic American life. So you have a pretty girl doing a jeans ad and they can’t help but freak out.”
