Need this ASAP.
This past Sunday at Red Rocks Amphitheater was one of the ages for Zach Bryan. Between debuting his brand new track with Kings of Leon, Bowery, live, bringing a pair of long-time fans up on stage for a performance of “Heading South,” performing “Madeline” with Gabriella Rose and even bringing his grandmother out for his sprawling performance of “Revival” to close the show, it was quite the night for the “Something in the Orange” singer.
One part of the night that might have been overlooked by many was his performance of Little Feat’s 1973 track, “Roll Um Easy,” which was the first-ever time Bryan had played the song live or in any form, for that matter.
In case you’re not familiar with Little Feat, they’re a rock band from the 1970s best known for hits such as “Willin'” and “Dixie Chicken.” Throughout their career, they’ve been nominated for two Grammys, most recently receiving a nod back in 2023 for Best Traditional Blues Album for their album, Sam’s Place.
Despite not being a traditional name associated with country music, Little Feat has been covered by the likes of Sierra Ferrell when she covered the aforementioned “Willin'” back in 2024 and Eric Church when he continually performed “Sailing Shoes” back in 2023 during his Outsiders Revival Tour. In fact, the Chief even performed “Dixie Chicken” with the band back in 2022 at the Ryman.
Back to Bryan, he took to Instagram early this morning to post a teaser of a studio version of his “Roll Um Easy” cover, and it sounds incredible. Staying fairly true to Little Feat’s original composition complete with twangy slides on the electric guitar, the Oklahoma native added some noticeable strings throughout the recording which sound perfect on the lyrical track. His upper range, in particular, sounds phenomenal here, delivering one of his best vocal performances to date.
Though it’s unknown if the cover will be released as a single or appear on his upcoming album, With Heaven On Top, it would mark just the second time in his career that he released officially released a cover on a studio album. The first and only, of course, being his cover of “You Are My Sunshine,” which appeared on American Heartbreak back in 2022.
Bryan will be back at it again tonight with the likes of Turnpike Troubadours, Kings of Leon and Noeline Hofmann in San Francisco at Golden Gate Park. Though he hasn’t revealed the setlist like he did for the Red Rocks show last weekend, I think there’s a good chance we see “Roll Um Easy” performed again over in the Bay Area. I don’t know about you, but I’m so here for it.
