Kayce Dutton is BACK.
It’s no secret that Yellowstone creator and writer, Taylor Sheridan, is one of the busiest men in Hollywood, and it’s also no secret that Paramount is gonna ride this thing until the wheels fall off. After the Yellowstone series finale, Paramount announced plans for a number of spinoff shows, featuring much of the old cast reprising their roles as the characters that many of us have come to know and love. And I’m not even talking about the prequels, 1883, 1923 and the upcoming 1944.
As of right now, there are three modern-day spinoff series taking shape: The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, a Rip and Beth-focused spinoff with the working title The Dutton Ranch, and Y: Marshals, a Kayce Dutton focused story that will move over to CBS.
CBS has given a 13-episode order for a program called Y: Marshals, where Luke Grimes will reprise his role as Kayce Dutton. Set to premiere on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, the show will explore his trained skillset as a former Navy SEAL a bit more:
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
It sounds like kind of a weird premise given the fact that Kayce always seemed to be trying to escape his time in the SEAL Teams, and the violence that the Dutton Ranch brought as well, but I’m here for it. Give me Navy SEAL Kayce, and the action that comes with it, all day.
Watch the new trailer and tell me you’re not excited… although, fans were quick to notice one big issue with the trailer:
Ummm… where’s Monica?
We saw Tate, we saw Chief Rainwater… we of course saw Kayce Dutton, but no Monica. A number of fans were quick to point that out in the comments:
“Where’s the wife?”
“Like what happened to Monica? Are we not supposed to know until we watched the series?”
“I suspect that his wife dies in the first episode and he gets into the Marshal Service to avenge her.”
“So what happened to his wife?”
There were plenty more just like that…
Kelsey Asbille Not In The Cast
As I mentioned before, Luke Grimes will reprise his role as Kayce Dutton, this time stepping into federal service, and Brecken Merrill is back as Tate Dutton, Kayce’s son. Gil Birmingham will return as Chief Rainwater, Mo Brings Plenty is back… but the real question mark right now is Kelsey Asbille, AKA Monica Dutton. To be fair, Monica got a lot of hate from Yellowstone fans, so I’m not surprised that Kelsey might not want to return, but that being said, how the heck are you going to do the show without her?
All in all, Y: Marshals promises an exciting evolution for the Yellowstone universe… more action, more familiar faces, and more of the Yellowstone world that fans have been hoping for, but much like the departure of Kevin Costner in the flagship series, it seems like something will be missing without Monica’s character. Their relationship was a major theme of the original show. Or who knows, maybe Tate just makes a couple quick scenes and the rest is runnin’ and gunnin’ Kayce Dutton… kickin’ a** and takin’ names.
Stay tuned…
