Some days it’s still hard to believe that it’s been over a year since we lost Toby Keith. The way country music fans still send his singles to number one on the charts, his friends tell stories about him or recall fond memories at times, making it feel like he is still with us on this earth.
There is no denying that stomach cancer took Toby Keith from us too soon, but it’s comforting knowing that he was at peace with whatever came his way. During one of his final interviews, Keith shared that going through the highs and lows of cancer treatment pushed him toward his faith and also taught him that he has to be okay no matter the outcome.
“… I just got to the point where I was comfortable with whatever happened. I had my brain wrapped around it, and I was in a good spot either way. People without faith don’t have that.”
Hearing those words will always leave me with chills.
While Toby Keith was battling cancer for years before he lost his fight, he was still living large up until the end. Every day, people continue to share memories of the “My List” singer living life to the fullest, and it’s heartwarming to see moments like this after his passing. One of these heartwarming memories that recently surfaced online was a moment that occurred at this child’s wedding.
Wedding singer John Allred is one of those people who has a Toby Keith memory that is worth a thousand words. The Santa Monica-based singer shared a video on his social media of the Big Dog Daddy, bent over next to him, strumming a guitar and performing a duet of the John Denver classic, “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”
“Singing some ‘Country Roads’ with Toby Keith at his kid’s wedding. The perks of being a wedding singer. This was about a year before he passed. RIP. Incredible voice.”
The footage appears to be from his son, Stelen’s, wedding, which was back in 2021.
Allred shared in the comments that for a long time, he felt uncomfortable sharing moments like this on his social media, but over the years, this moment still holds a very special place in his heart, and so he wanted to share it with the world.
“Used to not post these things. But over time, this has become such a special moment. He said really meaningful things to me.”
I can only imagine how special it is. The two men sound great together, and the impromptu performance, I am sure, was a treat to all the wedding guests. It’s also heartwarming to hear that Keith sat and talked to Allred, passing along some words of wisdom.
