Lukas Nelson, son of the living legend Willie Nelson, put on a special show earlier this CMA Fest week to preview his forthcoming record, American Romance, which is due everywhere on June 20 via Sony Nashville.
Held in Chief’s on Broadway’s Neon Steeple, the night featured a star-studded lineup which included Sierra Ferrell, Marcus King, Willow Avalon, and Eric Church. All the artists got up on stage to perform some of the songs off the upcoming album, along with some old tunes.
In addition, there was just some downright fun on stage when Lukas and Eric Church put a country spin on Sabina Carpenter’s smash hit “Please, Please, Please.”
I must admit that the cover has lived rent-free in my head since the event. It’s too good.
But another moment from the night deserves recognition, too. Tim McGraw’s youngest daughter, Audrey, jumped on stage to sing a brand new song she and Nelson wrote together.
Audrey McGraw is following in her father’s footsteps, pursuing a career in music, and has captivated country fans with her angelic voice. Her parents are also proud of her vocal ability, constantly promoting her music and sharing what she’s been up to. Earlier this year, Tim McGraw rightfully gushed over her performance of “Cucurrucucú Paloma,” a Mexican song written by Tomás Méndez in 1954 and famously known for the rendition sung by Lola Beltrán.
“Had to post this, our baby girl Audrey bringing mom and dad to tears!”
For the event at Chief’s, Audrey shared the footage of her duetting with Nelson, noting that they wrote the song shortly after they met.
“Lukas and I wrote ‘Descent into Love’ a few days after we met. It was the first song we wrote together… been holding onto it for a while, but the other night we finally got to share it live. I can’t wait to put it out one day. It’s a special one.
And by the way… he put on a kick a** show with some amazing folks. WOW!! Was honored to be up there. Xxx”
The song features a soft acoustic melody, letting their harmonies shine. The heartbreaking tune details a heartbroken character trying to get over a past lover. The music is hauntingly beautiful as Audrey sends her vocals into a falsetto tone during the chorus.
Audrey McGraw’s statement that this song is special rings true because I am craving more of this tune based on this snippet of their performance.
Given that “Descent Into Love” is not on Lukas’ tracklist for American Romance, this song might appear on a project Audrey McGraw is working on. McGraw has released two singles over the last month, her debut single “I Am… I Said,” followed by her latest release “Thunder.”
In her most recent single, the strong piano ballad highlights her captivating vocals and storytelling that is well beyond her years.
While there are no details about what McGraw is working on or what genre her music will fall into, it’s apparent that she will be forced to be reckoned with. The music she’s released thus far is a strong way to come out of the gate as an artist.
