It’s been five days since Texas was devastated by the ruthless flooding of the Guadalupe River and its tributaries. Several Texas counties were affected by the flood, with Texas Hill County and Kerr County getting the brunt of the damage.

So far 120 lives have been claimed by the tragedy, and the death toll is only rising as flooding continues to surge throughout the surrounding areas.

One area that was severely affected by the flood was Camp Mystic, a summer camp heavily reported on due to its close proximity to the Guadalupe River. Established in 1962, the private Christian camp for young girls was renowned for being a beautiful summer getaway, under lush cypress and live oak trees, and on the banks of the stunning Guadalupe River.

Tragically, because of the camp’s location, the cabins became extremely vulnerable due to the raging conditions. In the wee hours of the morning, flood waters rose to over 29 feet in under 45 minutes at the lowest points of elevation on Camp Mystic property. Twenty-seven young campers lost their lives, as well as many counselors .

A haunting video was recently released by a camper who was on an evacuation bus out of Camp Mystic. The camper, Devon Paige, posted the video to her TikTok account, @dpaige323. The video shows her and her fellow evacuees softly singing the Christian Hymn “Sanctuary” as the bus passed by acres of destruction. The caption reads:

“On a bus to the reunification center. The girls are singing to try and calm everyone.

This is footage from my evacuation and everything I saw. I wish you could see before shots to show how truly devastating it is.”

Devon shares another video from on the bus, capturing camper reactions to damage done to cars and other property. Cars appear to be flipped over and even stacked on top of one another due to the powerful flood waters.

As damage costs rise to over an estimated $18 billion dollars, many country music stars have spoken out on ways to help aid Texans, as well as making their own donations to relief efforts.

Another video Devon posted shows more of the destruction to the surrounding area. In this video, you can see huge trees knocked over, as well as stretches of land submerged in the murky flood water.

In the background, campers can be heard singing along to the song “Today” by Bobby Goldsboro, a song that embraces the joy and beauty of living in the present.

“A million
tomorrows shall
all pass away
Ere I forget all
the joy that is
mine today”

A very symbolic song for these girls and their current situation. I can’t even imagine the trauma that they endured, and it’s a beautiful thing to see them cope with the destruction through song. I just hope that they are able to heal from this experience.
