A huge debut for Tyler Childers .

The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter scored his highest debut to date on the all-genre Billboard 200 albums chart this week, as his new album Snipe Hunter debuted at #7 this week, earning 48,000 equivalent units. It’s his third top 10 in total, but it’s really cool to see him coming out of the gate with such a hot start with this project:

Of course, the record was produced by Rick Rubin, a legendary producer who has worked with everyone from Beastie Boys and Run DMC to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica, and he has a reputation for pushing artists well outside of their comfort zones and creating real magic. I was surprised, but extremely excited, to see him and Tyler were formally working together, and as was expected, they delivered something very unique and creatively different than anything Tyler has done before.

Some of the reaction to it has been mixed at best, but I feel like it’s not shocking that having Rubin produce Snipe Hunter would mean Tyler’s going to do something outside of his norm… that’s kind of the point of getting someone like him onboard. That’s what he does best.

Tyler himself, as well as Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn, also have producing credits on Snipe Hunter, and easily the runaway hit so far has been “Bitin’ List,” which has over 65,000 TikTok videos thus far with the song, over half a million streams in just one day (August 1st) and continues to climb all-genre charts at iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify and more. It’s also created some drama between Zach Bryan and Brianna Chickenfry, but I digress…

Snipe Hunter is also currently #1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums, Americana/Folk Albums and Indie Store Albums charts as well as #2 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and #20 on the all-genre Top Streaming Albums chart.

Saying it’s off to a strong start kind of feels like an understatement, and while there may be some online critics who are extremely vocal, it’s clear that most people are loving the album, and I think Tyler’s reaching a larger audience than ever before which is really cool to see. He’s breaking into the mainstream in a tangible way, and I’m sure some “fans” will complain about that too…

I have a feeling there are even higher debuts in his future, but this is very well-deserved and a long time coming.
