WATCH: Michelle Pfeiffer & Kurt Russell Shine In Emotional First Trailer For Taylor Sheridan’s ‘The Madison’

On Friday, Paramount+ released a first look at the latest Taylor Sheridan project, The Madison, which was initially billed as some kind of Yellowstone spinoff series.
The series is described to be some of Sheridan’s most intimate work, and will tell a story that explores grief and human connection. As far as plot is concerned, the series revolves around the titular character of Stacy Clyburn (played by Pfeiffer), a wealthy matriarch who upends her life in New York City to move her and her family to Montana following a plane crash that kills her husband and brother-in-law. It will also star Kurt Russell, among others.
It was unclear how the story of Yellowstone would tie in, with some fans even thinking that The Madison would be related to the storyline from prequel series, 1923. One fan theory suggested that Elizabeth Dutton, who was pregnant with the late Jack Dutton’s baby at the end of 1923 and set to return to Boston, went on to marry into a wealthy, east coast elite type of family (maybe the Clyburns), and in The Madison tells the story of how that particular line of the Dutton family returned to their roots in Montana’s Madison River Valley, which is relatively close to where the Dutton Ranch would’ve been.
However, that won’t be the case because representative for the show confirmed to Whiskey Riff that The Madison is not considered a Yellowstone spinoff at all.
Of course, we asked for more clarification, but as it stands right now, the show appears to be a separate endeavor for Taylor Sheridan. Regardless, we’ll find out when The Madison premiers on March 14 on Paramount+. Two seasons of the show have already been filmed, and Season 1 is said to feature just 6 episodes. That’s by far the shortest season of a Taylor Sheridan-lead series (most seasons are 8 or 10 episodes), there is a bit of a twist. There is reportedly an outside chance that it could be released as a “Part 2” of Season 1, though the plan as of right now is to hold it and release it as a second season.
Paramount dropped the new trailer this morning, and from this brief glance, it feels like we’re not going to get the typical Taylor Sheridan level of action and intensity from The Madison, but perhaps a more emotional, deeper look at the human experience…. which lines up with the description we’ve already been given. The trailer offers a haunting first look at Michelle Pfeiffer as a grieving matriarch moving her family from New York City to Montana. Featuring an intense performance by Kurt Russell and the cinematic landscapes that have become Sheridan’s trademark, the footage confirms that while this may not be a Yellowstone spinoff, it carries all the grit and gravitas of a modern Western masterpiece.
Anything with Taylor Sheridan’s name on it can generally garner my attention these days, but this has the makings of his best work to date.
