Letting their raw emotions show.

Angela and Tommy Norris from Landman might be a highly dysfunctional relationship, but it’s one that the nation loves. The previously divorced couple chose to rekindle things during Season 1 of Landman. During Season 2, Tommy’s father, T.L., reminded Tommy that when you find a woman who loves you the way Angela does, you work through all the craziness to make it work.

Now the couple has found a path forward to keep the spark alive, though it still looks a little dysfunctional to the naked eye. It’s beyond apparent that Tommy and Angela do love and care deeply for each other.

But how do these two actors, Ali Larter and Billy Bob Thornton, portray such complex emotions of this couple on screen so well when they are not emotionally intertwined in real life? Aside from being phenomenal actors, Ali Larter has shared in recent interviews the work and characteristics of working with Thornton that bring this fictional love story to life when the cameras turn on.

Ali Larter has previously touched on the chemistry she and Billy Bob Thornton share on screen while appearing on CBS Mornings, noting that a large part of it comes from mutual respect and admiration for each other, as well as for the other actors and the team on set.

“It’s so interesting, you never know where chemistry is going to come from, and I think that you know he commits and spends so much time on the set. He’s incredibly present and giving as an actor. So, when you’re number one on the call sheet, you really set the tone for how it’s going to run on set, and we both work in a similar way that we love what we do.

And we also feel really grateful to be a part of something where the writing is that special, so we do the work… When you have that level of respect, that’s where the chemistry comes from.”

But during a recent sit-down on The Drew Barrymore Show, Larter shared that she and Billy Bob also worked together to ensure that there was room for their characters to grow past the first season. And they did that by allowing their raw emotions to shine through on camera—addressing emotions as a real-life couple would.

“So like on the page, you know we had all 10 episodes in the first season, and on the page what was written was a very costic relationship. There wasn’t as much love and heart, and when Billy and I met, we really talked about how, especially with a TV show, this could go on; we don’t know.

But he does not have an inauthentic beat, and he’s like, ‘Relationships are so messy. Let’s find all the things between us we can put into this work.’ So he doesn’t rehearse, and so when I show up on set with him, I’m very prepared, and we’re just living. And he has raised my game, and it’s just like every moment you don’t know, as we don’t know in human life if something’s going to make you cry or laugh, or you’re just like you know, blase, blase.

I don’t know, but we just find it, and it’s real. We’re exchanging energy is what it feels like.

What we found in these characters is that they love each other for who they truly are, no matter what antics they play and pull off. So, no matter, you know, the shenanigans that Angela does, she shows him her worst self, and he still loves her.”

Tommy does love that woman more than anyone can understand. If he didn’t love her, he would not put up with all of Angela’s themed dinner antics or spending habits.

While Season 2 is about to come to an end, it will be interesting to see how Angela reacts to learning that Tommy was let go by M-Tex Oil…I have a feeling Cami might be on her hit list after messing with her husband’s income.
