Come again, Mr. Childers?

Opening up the show with the first song off the Snipe Hunter tracklist. During a recent show in Camden, New Jersey, Tyler Childers opened his set with a hilarious monologue. If you’re new to a Timmy Tyler rant, welcome to some of the best footage you will ever watch.

Childers has gone on some quite memorable tangents over the years, from making fun of fans who are upset he no longer plays “Feathered Indians” at his shows, to raving about aquarium potato wedges, and even disclosing a little too much information about some liquid s*** that led to him rescheduling a show.

Most recently, Childers delivered a fantastic message ahead of “Bitin’ List” at Healing Appalachia, encouraging fans to let their hatred for someone go while belting out the lyrics of the tune. While that was a great tangent, the way he opened his show in New Jersey takes the cake for the best Tyler Childers monologue delivered thus far.

To open the show, Childers and The Food Stamps kicked things off with “Eatin’ Big Time,” one of my personal favorite tunes from Snipe Hunter. After the song was released, many fans thought Childers had penned an “eat the rich” anthem, but it’s far from that.

The tune is really about Tyler Childers being wealthy and successful, and still being a country boy at heart. A funny, almost self-deprecating in some ways, celebration of Tyler and the boys finally “making it” by the sweat of their brow, and doing it the right way, after all those years of working hard to turn this dream into a reality.

For those who know their Tyler Childers lore, “Eatin’ Big Time” has been a motto for Tyler and his band, The Food Stamps, for years as they’ve continued to grow in success. It started off as a funny, tongue-in-cheek expression they’d throw out when something “big” happened, and when you’re packing six guys in a van to play a room of 150 people, “big” could mean getting an extra appetizer at Applebee’s because the server recognized you.

This old tweet between Tyler and his wife probably best illustrates the genesis of the phrase:

In a way, Childers opened the show with a similar interaction that references his wife…

A concert attendee captured the moment and noted that she felt like this was the chattiest she’s seen Tyler Childers in the last few years, and given how he came out on stage paired with how much he’s talked between songs during recent shows, I’d agree with that statement.

“In the 6 times I’ve seen him over 4 years, tonight was the most I remember him speaking. This is the joke that opened the show.”

And what a joke it is…

“This song right here is on our new album. It came out not too long ago, it’s called ‘Eatin’ Big Time.’ ‘Eatin’ Big Time’ is a lot of things, like a way of life. I think right now is eatin’ big time! Do you feel like it’s that way? That’s how I feel.

You know, I knew this guy, his name was Wayne Homen. He was a bada** motherf***er. He was a comrade and a sniper in Vietnam, and he told me a very important thing that I will never, ever, ever forget. And you will do well to remember it also.

He said, ‘Tyler, if you ain’t eatin’ that p***y… well sombody’s eatin’ it.'”

Just like the lady behind the camera, I lost it when I heard him deliver that line. Hey… I guess in a way that is “Eatin’ Big Time.”

Once again, if you know your Tyler Childers lore, you also know that it’s not the first time he’s told that story, but seeing as how Timmy Tyler has garnered a whole mess of new fans in the past couple years, I’m sure many were just as shocked as the folks there.

Check out some of the comments left on this post. Just like Childers’ unexpected joke, they are gold.

“*high fives Senora May*”

“Senora May is the luckiest lady.”

“I’m glad you recorded this because my husband and I were dying laughing.”

“It sure looks like he’s having a lot more fun lately!”

“I was dying laughing, wasn’t expecting him to say that LOL.”

“AMAZING.”

Fire up “Eatin’ Big Time” before you go.
