Finally getting some mainstream attention?

At this point, it’s hardly a secret that the Turnpike Troubadours are not only one of the best country bands of our generation but arguably of all time. With six albums’ worth of what can only be described as brilliance over the past 15 years, the Oklahoma band has proven time and time again why they’re one of the best in the business.

After a six-year album hiatus stemming from frontman Evan Felker’s alcoholism (and subsequent recovery), Turnpike made their triumphant return in 2023 with A Cat in the Rain after playing sporadic shows in 2022 and have never really looked back. With more shows, bigger venues and larger concert bills thanks to Zach Bryan and Cross Canadian Ragweed’s reunion shows back in April, the Red Dirt giants are arguably the biggest they’ve ever been.

After essentially surprise-dropping their most recent album, The Price of Admissionwith less than a week between an official announcement and its release, Turnpike once again proved their importance in the genre with another stellar record. Out of the 11 tracks on the record, the clear standout to me (and plenty of other Turnpike fans out there) was none other than track number five, “Heaven Passing Through.”

Written independently by Felker, “Heaven Passing Through” serves as one of the emotional cornerstones of the album. Quite clearly about living life to its fullest, centered around fatherhood and family, and ultimately a reflection on his life during his newfound sobriety, the track became an instant favorite with over 7.5 million streams on Spotify alone and nearly 2,000 videos using the song on TikTok as of today.

Back on July 28th, it was officially announced that “Heaven Passing Through” would be sent to country radio on August 18th, marking their second-ever song sent to the format with “Chipping Mill” being sent back in August 2023.

Unlike “Chipping Mill,” which made minimal impact upon being sent in, “Heaven Passing Through” debuted today as the second-most added song to US Country Radio this week with 36 stations across the nation adding the song into their rotation. “Heaven Passing Through’s” 36 adds double Megan Moroney’s “6 Months Later” and triple Brett Young’s “Drink With You.” Unfortunately, it could not top the abhorrent “All My Exes” by Lauren Alaina and Chase Matthew, which took the top spot with 51.
