A bittersweet release.

Back on November 15, it was announced that country and folk singer/songwriter Todd Snider had tragically passed away following a battle with pneumonia. Days earlier, Snider had been admitted to the hospital in Hendersonville, Tennessee, just outside of Nashville, after canceling the rest of his 2025 tour following a bizarre string of incidents while on the road in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Snider was scheduled to play a show at Salt Lake City’s Commonwealth Room. However, before he was set to go up on stage, the venue shared that the singer-songwriter would be unable to perform due to “injuries sustained in an incident.”

“Due to injuries sustained in an incident last night, Todd Snider will be unable to perform at the Commonwealth Room tonight (Nov. 1) in Salt Lake City. We deeply apologize for the postponement and appreciate everyone’s understanding as he gets treated. More information on a new date will be available soon.”

His team followed that up with their own statement, claiming that the singer had been “violently attacked” and announcing the cancellation of the rest of the tour.

“We are heartbroken to announce the cancellation of the ‘High, Lonesome and Then Some’ 2025 Tour dates. Ahead of Todd Snider’s show in Salt Lake City, Todd sustained severe injuries as the victim of a violent assault outside of his hotel.

Todd will be unable to perform for an undetermined amount of time. We deeply apologize for the cancellation and any inconvenience it causes. We appreciate your understanding as Todd receives needed medical treatment. We hope to have more information on new dates soon.”

But that was just the beginning, because Snider was actually arrested at the hospital and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for disorderly conduct, making violent threats, and trespassing. The country singer allegedly went to the hospital, was treated for his injury, and once he was discharged, he tried to go to another hospital complaining of pain and difficulty breathing and asked to spend the night… when he was refused and became combative.

Ultimately, the details surrounding his final days have been a bit hazy due to early conflicting reports from both Snider’s team and the eventual reports from the Salt Lake City Police Department. It appears as though Todd was never attacked, and his injury was self-inflicted, perhaps from some kind of fall. It’s unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role. One thing that can be confirmed, without a doubt, however, is the fact that Snider’s passing has left a major hole in the hearts of many in the country, folk and Americana scene due to his long history of brilliant songwriting, advocacy and influence on some of today’s most talented stars.

Of course, one of the bands influenced by Snider is none other than the Red Dirt legends themselves, the Turnpike Troubadours, and they’re honoring the late legend the best way they know how — with a cover of Snider’s “Just Like Old Times.”

Additionally, they would share the cover art for the single, which depicts Snider’s patented Western-style fedora that he frequently sported throughout his career, complete with the same art style present on their most recent album, The Price of Admission.

Taking to Instagram this morning to announce the cover’s release, Turnpike would thank Snider for his impact on their music before telling him to rest easy:

“Rest easy. Thank you for everything.”

In case you’re unfamiliar with the track, which would be understandable given how much music Snider had released throughout the course of his 30-year career, “Just Like Old Times” was released on his 2006 album, The Devil You Know. Undoubtedly a testament to his incredible songwriting ability, the track centers around Snider reminiscing about a former lover before eventually rekindling their romance.

While the song’s concept, on the surface, may seem like a tried and true one for country music, “Just Like Old Times” is elevated tenfold with some incredible attention to detail and meticulously paced storytelling that makes you feel like you’re recalling this tale of long-lost love right there with Snider.

“Good thing we didn’t throw this away, babyTurn up that radioI’m pretty sure that cop knew what we were up toI guess he just decided to let us goDon’t make such a thing about that pictureThat was just something I keptDon’t get all sentimental on me now, girlYou haven’t even told me what your new name is yet”

Unsurprisingly, Turnpike absolutely crushed this cover. Produced once again by Shooter Jennings, “Just Like Old Times” feels like a perfect blend of Turnpike’s signature sound while still adhering to the stripped-back nature of Snider’s original composition. And, of course, Evan Felker’s smooth vocals simply feel like butter on the nostalgic track.

This is nothing short of a must-listen for fans of both Snider and Turnpike.
