Taylor Sheridan is a different breed.
Of course, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw were the stars of Taylor Sheridan’s prequel to the hit series Yellowstone, 1883, which went for one season and consisted of 10 episodes as the earliest Dutton settlers fought their way West and eventually settled on the modern-day Dutton Ranch.
Like all of writer and show-runner Sheridan’s shows, it’s extremely authentic, and tons of time, detail and research goes into crafting each script, which McGraw talked about at-length in an interview with Tracy Lawrence on his TL’s Road House podcast. Tracy talked about all of the shows that Sheridan creates and writes, which is a long list including Yellowstone, 1923, Landman, Lioness, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown and more.
So, it would only make sense that while Sheridan oversees it all, he likely has a big team of writers to help him because there’s simply no way one human can do all of that, right? Well, according to Tim, not so much… Sheridan writes it all, and somehow goes without a lot of sleep to get it done. But I guess that would be the only way, because who would have time otherwise:
“He certainly has a team, but, he is the writer. He’s the writer. I’m telling you, he is one of the most incredible writers ever. And he’ll go three or four weeks in a row without sleeping and write. He’ll just stop writing, and then he’ll write, and then he’ll stop writing, and then he’ll write.
And that was one of the things that sold us on ‘1883,’ that brought Faith and I onboard. You know, at first we did the prequel stuff on ‘Yellowstone,’ and that was just gonna be flashback, kinda one-off thing. And then it worked so well that they came to us and wanted to do a whole series on it. And we were like, you know, well, this sounds good, but we gotta see the writing.
When we got the scripts in, it was so poetic, the writing was just so incredible that it was hard to say no to. But that’s how talented he is, he’s doing some great work, great stuff. And ‘Landman,’ my daughter Audrey is in. She’s in a couple episodes last season, a couple episodes this season.”
It’s impressive, to say the least, and I can’t imagine going without that much sleep and even trying to keep it together, but that’s part of what’s made the Sheridan universe so successful. It certainly can’t be easy running a $3 billion company.
In terms of Tim and Faith’s involvement in that world, it’s seemingly over because McGraw told Lawrence he doesn’t think there will be another season of 1883:
“I doubt it, because I think they’re moving on to 1940-something now. And look, ‘1883’ was just such a one-off special, because it was the journey. The origin story to get to a destination. And there’s only so many river crossing, and snake bikes, and gun fights that you can have.”
It’s hard to argue with that.
Tim and Faith were incredible in that show, so it would be really cool if they could come back in some capacity, or even be on a different show, though I’m not sure how likely that is.
The funniest part of this discussion, though (other than the story about having to tell Faith she had to stop shaving for her role), was when they talked about the complex Dutton family tree and how, when watching this recent season of 1923, they were very proud of their son, Spencer, at the end, who saved the day:
“Spencer, who is our son, Faith and I were watching it and we’re like, ‘Our boy showed up and saved the day. He came back.’ Spencer’s bad***. Spencer’s a lot like his dad.”
Tim McGraw with the dad jokes… too good.
The whole interview with Tracy is great, and you can watch it here:
