Gonna be able to take a well-deserved vacation now.
In this age of social media we see plenty of instances where a wannabe-influencer tries to harass somebody for their politics or for simply doing their job, and oftentimes it ends up backfiring because TikTokers live in a bubble where they think everybody agrees with them and that they can do whatever they want for content.
And that’s exactly what happened here.
A Chico, California woman named Michelea Ponce recently decided to harass an elderly Target employee for wearing a Charlie Kirk shirt, and for some reason decided to upload it to her TikTok account, @motherofballers, apparently not realizing that it only makes herself look bad.
In the video, Ponce can be heard confronting the employee over the shirt, which says “Freedom” with Kirk’s name below it, asking the elderly lady whether she’s allowed to wear the red shirt while at work.
The employee confirms that she’s allowed to wear any red shirt, and the TikToker then becomes unhinged and starts berating the Target employee:
“Are you f—ing stupid? Why the f— would you wear that? You’re at work, at Target. That’s not a Target shirt. That’s not a plain red shirt. You support a racist.”
The elderly lady remains incredibly calm during the entire ordeal, explaining that she wasn’t going to argue with her and that she doesn’t believe that Kirk was racist. The woman, meanwhile, continues on her tirade:
“You should go get your manager. You should not be allowed to wear that at work. Unacceptable. Un-f—ing-acceptable. The opinion is that he’s a f—ing racist and you support him. You should not be allowed to wear that. This is going to be taken above your f—ing head. That’s insane. Insane. Piece of s–t.”
I mean, kudos to the employee for just calmly walking away and not giving this crazy lady the response she was clearly hoping for.
Well the video did indeed go viral, but probably not for the reasons Ponce expected when she posted it. Several large conservative accounts quickly worked to identify the employee in the video, and started a crowdfunding campaign to send her on a nice vacation for the way she conducted herself.
But she may be able to take more than a vacation: As of right now, the GiveSendGo campaign has already raised nearly $150,000 for the woman, who has since been identified as Jeanie Beeman.
Meanwhile, internet sleuths also managed to uncover Ponce’s place of employment, and have apparently been blowing up their phones since the video went viral.
Enloe Health, where Ponce reportedly works as a nurse, released a statement yesterday confirming that the Chico Police Department was investigating the incident, and expressing their concern over their employees behavior.
“The Chico Police Department is investigating a social media post on the personal account of an Enloe Health employee. We are deeply concerned about the tenor of this post and the response it is creating from individuals of all political persuasions.
We ask for patience and calm as we conduct our own internal investigation of this matter. In the meantime, we are relying on the expertise of the Chico Police Department to investigate any potential criminal activity or threats related to it.”
The private health system also asked that people wishing to express their opinion stop calling their main line so as not to disturb their ability to provide care to patients.
I feel like there are plenty of lessons here that should – but probably won’t – be taken from this. If you’re going to be a disgusting person and harass an elderly customer service employee, you probably shouldn’t post it on your social media account for the world to see. But even more than that, maybe just don’t be a sh—y person in general.
Oh, and as for Beeman, she says that her managers were just fine with her shirt and are supporting her through the entire situation:
Of course I’m sure the woman who recorded the video still thinks she was in the right and is a victim of “cancel culture.” Because that’s just the time we’re living in.The post The Internet Has Raised $150k For An Elderly Target Employee Who Was Harassed By A TikToker For Wearing A Charlie Kirk Shirt first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
