The Augusta Hooters, Where John Daly Has Historically Posted Up During The Masters, Has Tragically Closed Down

Say a prayer for John Daly today… he’s suffered a devastating loss.

The golf legend is known for many things. His big drives. His ability to down inordinate amounts of alcohol. His loud personality. His love for Diet Coke. But there’s one thing that he’s known for that’s become a tradition unlike any other that’s corresponds with the actual tradition unlike any other.

Setting up his RV at a Hooters in Augusta, Georgia during Masters week.

The week of the Masters – professional golf’s first (and best) major of the year – is simply spectacular. It tees off when Winter finally turns the corner into Spring, and the azaleas are in full bloom at Augusta National Golf Club. And outside of the hallowed grounds, the one thing that happens ever year that let’s everyone know The Masters has officially begun is John Daly rolling into town and setting up shop.

A mere mile away from the hallowed grounds at Augusta National Golf Club sits a Hooters restaurant, and that’s where the legendary pro golfer typically parks his RV so that he can sign autographs and sell merchandise. Though the franchise as a whole has been struggling, it seemed as though this particular Hooters in Georgia was business as usual. I truly thought that Daly’s annual presence at the restaurant would help keep it afloat as other locations of the restaurant that specializes in… wings have shuttered.

Here’s a video from a couple of years back showing Daly’s set up at the Hooters closest to the home of The Masters:

But I’ve got some terrible, horrible, very bad news.

The Augusta Hooters location, with the address of 2834 Washington Road, has officially closed its doors. Is that shocking? Both yes and no. Hooters has been facing a decline in customers and liquidity issues in the past couple of years, which has led to them shuttering over 40 different locations across the United States, and filing for bankruptcy back in March of this year.

According to initial reports, the chain was expected to attempt to restructure their debt by filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy. You might remember that Red Lobster did something similar just last year, which led to the seafood brand closing down a number of additional locations, yet allowing for them to still stay afloat financially. It was believed that Hooter’s would follow in Red Lobster’s footsteps, and there was an understanding that the chain known for their scantily clad servers would be able to come out on the other side eventually.

And if there was one location that I thought was safe from completely shutting down, it was the Augusta one. But like all great empires, the Masters-adjacent Hooters shut its doors earlier this week, as they made clear in a statement:

“After many years of irreverent fun, our Augusta location closed on July 24, as expected, following the end of our lease. We thank our loyal customers for all of the amazing memories we made in Augusta over the years, and we hope to see them at another one of our locations in the near future.”
