Would be his most popular executive order yet.

We’re just a day away from the official kickoff of the 2025 college football season. (And yeah, I know there were a few games last weekend, but I’m not counting week zero games as the official kickoff).

There’s a full slate of games starting tomorrow afternoon, which rolls right on through the weekend – and through the college football playoffs in January. Which means that from now until the championship games, my weekends are booked and I’ll be sitting on my couch, eating chicken wings and pounding beers, and checking my DraftKings account as I lose yet another parlay.

I can’t wait.

But of course fall is also a popular time for weddings. The weather’s cooler so it’s better for outdoor weddings, there’s fall scenery for wedding photos, and it’s generally not a time when their guests would have already scheduled vacations that would conflict with attending a wedding.

See the issue here?

Every year, thousands of poor football fans are forced to choose between college football and spending a Saturday at a wedding surrounded by people they probably don’t know, sneaking off to watch the game whenever they can or checking the score on their phone between the first dance and cutting the cake.

Of course, there are some people who just watch the game on their phone during the ceremony…

I mean, could you imagine not being able to watch Vanderbilt beat Alabama last year because you were doing the Cupid Shuffle with a group of people you haven’t seen in 10 years?

Well Secretary of State Marco Rubio recognizes that it’s a problem…and he’s asking the president to take action.

Yesterday during a cabinet meeting, Rubio raised the important issue with President Donald Trump:

“I wasn’t even going to raise it. I haven’t even talked to you about this. It’s a little controversial, but I think I need to bring it up at this time of year. This thing about people getting married on Saturdays during college football season is a scourge, Mr. President.

It’s dividing families. And I don’t know if we can have an executive order on this, but it’s really difficult. There’s seven other months of the year that people can get married, so I just wanted to say that. It’s very, very difficult.”

Amen.

Of course President Trump isn’t really known to be a big college football fan (more of a golf guy), but he’s attended his fair share of football games both as a candidate and as president, so he’s clearly aware of just how important college football is to fans of their teams.

Even Vice President JD Vance was forced to choose between college football and his own inauguration when his Ohio State Buckeyes were playing in the national championship game at the same time as he was being sworn in earlier this year. If he had trouble deciding between becoming Vice President and watching college football, you’ve gotta think there’s no way he would have been at a wedding during football season.

I think it’s time we finally address this issue once and for all. And I’m glad Rubio is bringing it to the president’s attention.
