Arsenal may not be finished in the transfer market just yet, with some sources suggesting the club still want to do more in terms of incomings, despite seven new players already coming through the door.
Arsenal confirmed the signing of Eberechi Eze today, before their 5-0 win over Leeds.
It is now being speculated that the Gunners are looking to bring in a new left-back before the end of the window. Any potential arrival, however, is likely to hinge on the sales of Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
The news of Arsenal’s interest in a new left-back comes from FIFA journalist Abdellah Boulma.
The Gunners have already made seven signings this summer, reshaping Mikel Arteta’s squad for the challenges ahead, but the left side of defence remains an area where there is scope for greater tactical variation. Currently, Kiwior is best suited as a left-sided centre back, but with Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori and even Cristhian Mosquera ahead of him in the pecking order, his opportunities look limited.
Zinchenko, meanwhile, has struggled to establish himself as a first-choice inverted full-back, with Calafiori, Jurrien Timber and even academy product Myles Lewis-Skelly offering more reliability and energy in that role.
What Arsenal lack is a natural overlapping left back – a player who can provide width, pace and a consistent outlet down the flank. With Eberechi Eze now arriving, his preference to drift inside from the wing could be perfectly complemented by a full-back driving beyond him, stretching opposition defences and creating new angles of attack. This is something Arsenal’s current crop does not naturally offer.
Such a signing would give Arteta a fresh tactical option, particularly from the bench in games where Arsenal are struggling to break opponents down. The ability to switch from an inverted system to a more traditional overlapping one could make the Gunners far less predictable and far more dangerous.
Of course, this ambition is dependent on sales. Kiwior remains of interest to several Premier League clubs, Serie A outfits and FC Porto, while Zinchenko has attracted attention from abroad. With Arsenal keen to balance the books after heavy investment this summer, offloading one or both could open the door to a final piece of recruitment.
Arteta has already spoken about the importance of flexibility and depth across the squad, and while the majority of Arsenal’s business is complete, the prospect of one more addition should not be ruled out. If they can generate funds through departures, the left-back position could yet see a new arrival before deadline day.
