Texas Rodeo Dog Goes Viral For Pretending To Turn Barrels Like The Horses On Pattern

Must’ve been a barrel horse in a past life.
Barn and rodeo dogs are something else. Growing up in the horse world, I’ve seen a lot of good horse show dogs and rodeo dogs in my day. The kind of dogs that never leave their owner’s side, unless they are on their horse, where they patiently wait near the end of the arena for their mom/dad to return.
But just like many of the horses their owners have, these dogs often love having a job. With many horse show dogs being herding breeds of dogs, they can often get bored sitting at stalls all day, and are waiting for the chance to do some work.
I will never forget sitting in the stands at the AQHA World Show a few years ago watching the western pleasure finals go, and seeing an Australian Shepherd “herding” the arena by circling the arena from the stands. The dog was very respectful, making no noise to disrupt the class, but it was very apparent that it needed to get some energy out, and as a working dog, this activity felt like corralling the horses in the ring.
While I wish I could share a video of this moment, the internet gods have given us another incredible viral moment: a barn dog hard at work watching horses in the arena. A Texas-based barrel racer shared an adorable video of her dog watching other horses on pattern from the stands.
The black-and-white pup must have been a barrel horse or a horse trainer in her past life because as soon as the horse was on pattern, she began turning and burning, as if egging the horse on to turn the barrel faster.
The dog’s owner, Kimber, shared the moment, captioning it:
“She’s in her own little world.”
That she sure is.
The dog running barrels just as well as the horses in the arena is too cute, and gives me the feeling that she might have run a pattern or two herself at home.
This dog clearly loves her job as an assistant barrel racer trainer.
