With the first scuzzy thrums of PØRTERS’ Recover, Newcastle’s fiercest five-piece lurch right out of the North Sea fog and into your speakers, jaws set, hackles up, ready to gnash at the dry bones of alt-rock predictability. The hooks do not so much sharpen as bristle, each verse a deliberate misstep into chaos, all as the rhythm section pulses with enough kinetic tension to power the city’s nightlife for a week. The velvet-fanged vocals of Maria Winter are an enigma unto themselves, switching from a smoulder of indie cool to something far more feral, femme fatale poised for a coup d’état. With every flip of the arrangement, PØRTERS serve up a deft barrage of garage-tinged rock licks and thunderous percussive rolls that rattle the notion of complacency out of even the most jaded listener.
