Of course, the original song was written and recorded by Jason Isbell for 2013 studio album Southeastern, and was inspired by his then-wife, Amanda Shires. He details his struggle with addiction and self-destruction before sobriety and how her love helped him overcome it. It’s a gorgeous ballad that has been made extremely popular in the mainstream by Morgan Wallen.
Morgan included his rendition of it on his massive 2021 Dangerous: The Double Album, which became a fan-favorite and a staple in Morgan’s catalog that he still plays at every concert.
Many hardcore Isbell fans hate that Morgan has had such a big moment with it, but I enjoy Morgan’s version and clearly it’s resonated on a massive scale, because of Morgan’s superstar status and huge platform, and I think that’s overall a net win for all of country music in terms of songs like this getting heard by the masses. Jason certainly enjoys the royalty checks…
Would I say Morgan’s version is better than the original? Probably not, but it’s a great rendition.
And because country is so popular right now in mainstream music, we’ve had pop stars from Post Malone to Beyoncé put out country projects, and even more do a few one-off songs that were country-inspired, like Chappell Roan who released “The Giver,” and Sabrina Carpenter, who collaborated with Dolly Parton on a remix of “Please, Please, Please.”
Which leads me to the next pop star dipping their toes into country, so to speak, as Benson Boone covered “Cover Me Up” during his show at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville last night. If you don’t immediately recognize his name, I’m sure you’ve heard his mega hit “Beautiful Things” at some point because it’s been everywhere for the last year or so… he’s also the guy that wears flashy outfits and does backflips onstage, which you might’ve seen a video of at some point on social media. He actually gets made fun of quite a lot, like a modern-day Imagine Dragons, but he’s a talented dude and good entertainer… I guess he blew up overnight, but I’m not really sure where all the hate comes from.
I thought he sounded great, and it’s cool that he decided to do a country cover while in Nashville, and obviously, he picked a great song. I’m not overly familiar with his music, but I was really impressed by this and his voice is perfect here.
