Phillies Karen may live on forever.
I’m Germ-Ex (99.9%) sure that the mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies will always be the Phillies Fanatic. No one is coming for the Fanatic’s job. That being said, the newest entrant to Phillies lore – “Phillies Karen” – could prove to have some staying power as an unofficial mascot. The female internet villain had a certain look, and now Philadelphia fans have decided to adopt it.
By now, I bet that you’ve heard the supervillain origin story of the woman that’s been coined “Phillies Karen.” But just in case you haven’t, let me get you caught up. During a contest between the Phillies and the Miami Marlins at LoneDepot Park in Miami a couple of weeks ago, Harrison Bader launched a ball deep into the stands for a home run.
That home run ball was up for grabs, and a father trying to catch the ball for his son ran to the end of his row and claimed the ball as his. The proud father took the baseball back to his son, the two joyously (and briefly) celebrated before “Phillies Karen” stomped over and demanded that she be given the ball.
She was so aggressive about it that the father handed the baseball over to her just so she’d get off of their backs, as you can see in this video below:
“Phillies Karen” claimed that the ball was hers, and that the father stole it from her. Surely she’s been around long enough to know the old saying: Finders keepers, losers weepers?
Needless to say, that’s disgusting and unsportsmanlike behavior. Everyone knows that if you are an adult and you catch a foul ball or a home run ball, it should go to the nearest kid in the area. It’s just the order of operations in the sports world, and it helps to inspire the youth.
There’s never a world where the ball should go to the angriest, most obnoxious old woman.
But that’s what happened on that fateful night. Though “Phillies Karen” kept the ball, the kid was treated to a number of different concessions to make up for the traumatic, Karen-induced moment. The Marlins gifted the young man with a goodie bag, and the Phillies got in touch with the father and son and allowed for him to a) meet Harrison Bader after the game and b) receive a bat that Bader signed.
Now that could have been the end of “Phillies Karen,” right? Well… that’s not exactly how the internet works. Social media sleuths got to work trying to identify the evil woman, but had no such luck in tracking her down. From what I understand, she’s still anonymous and likely out in the world stealing candy from babies (that’s reckless speculation).
Despite her wickedness, the image and presence of “Phillies Karen” may forever live on within the Philadelphia organization. It seems as though fans are now dressing up as the vile woman (Phillies jersey over red hoodie, glasses, and grey “can I please speak with your manager” haircut), and she could very well live on in infamy within the Philly fanbase.
And through Halloween costumes:
Brilliant work by those Phillies fans.
And just to give another update, Drew Feltwell, the father of the young boy at the center of the viral video, has pleaded for people to leave the “Phillies Karen” woman alone.
During an interview with USA Today, Feltwell said that he was concerned that the backlash would go too far:
“Please don’t do anything to that lady. Leave it alone. You know, somebody knows her and can talk to her, that’s different. But God, I don’t want people breaking in their house and stuff like that. The internet already messed her up pretty good.”
So does dressing up as the “Phillies Karen” count as leaving it alone? Or no?The post “Phillies Karen” Is About To Be One Of The Premiere Halloween Costumes Of 2025 first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
