I don’t even know how he got through it.

Last week, Pat Green gave an emotional performance of his song “Wave On Wave” during a show at Golden Nugget Casino in Lake Charles, Louisiana on July 18th, which was the same day as his brother’s, sister-in-law’s and two nephew’s funerals after they tragically lost their lives in the Kerr County, Texas, Floods.

At this point, we are all familiar with the news that parts of Texas were ravaged by flash flooding over the 4th of July weekend. The death toll has reached 135, rescue missions are now recovery missions, with several people still unaccounted for, and it’s obviously been a horrific tragedy that has affected so many people.

One person suffering a loss from the horrific events is the Texas singer-songwriter Pat Green. After the floods, Green shared on Instagram that he had suffered a “heartbreaking and deeply personal loss” as a result of the flooding.

“Over the weekend, during the devastating flooding that hit Central Texas, my family – like so many others – suffered a heartbreaking and deeply personal loss. We are grieving alongside countless Texans whose lives have been upended by this tragedy.

Right now, we kindly ask for privacy and space as we mourn, support each other, and begin to process what comes next for our family. Thank you for your love, prayers, and compassion.”

After Pat shared that on social media, his wife, Kori, shared more information about their family’s situation on her social media pages, and it’s unimaginable. Kori shared that Pat’s youngest brother, John Burgess, his wife, Julia, and two children were swept away in the flood. Their young daughter, Green’s niece, did survive and clearly had her life changed forever, losing her parents and siblings in ways that are just unimaginable and heartbreaking:

“We are so thankful for the outpouring of love and concern. Pat’s little brother John, his wife, Julia, and two of their children were swept away in the Kerrville flood. We are heartbroken and anxiously waiting for all of them to be found. Thank you for your prayers.”

Green’s youngest brother, John Burgess, and his wife, Julia, were staying in the Texas Hill Country to go pick up their eldest daughter at a camp that was not impacted by the flooding. The family had rented a place at the Blue Oak RV Park in Kerr County, which was the region most affected by the floods. When the Guadalupe River began to rise, the RV park was a location that was nearly washed away by the floodwaters.

While mourning the loss of his family members, Green still put together an incredible benefit concert to help others in need. On July 16th, country artists gathered at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, for Pat Green and Friends: Texas Flood Relief Livestream. The non-ticketed, no-audience livestream created a benefit show that country fans from all over could attend and support a fantastic cause while watching.

The concert raised an astonishing amount of money, with over $1 million raised for flood victims ad recovery efforts, and it was beyond impressive that he was able to carry on like that and do so much good during what I’m sure has been the most difficult time in his life.

So it was beyond understandable that he had a very emotional moment during the aforementioned concert while singing the title track to his 2003 album, which finds him holding onto hope beyond himself after the right person came into his life at the right time:

The clouds broke and the angels cried:
“You ain’t gotta walk alone.”
That’s why it put me in your hands.
When it came upon me wave on wave.

You came upon me, wave on wave.
You’re the reason I’m still here, yeah.
Am I the one you were sent to save?
You came upon me, wave on wave.”

Ahead of the song, he dedicated the performance to his late brother, sister-in-law, their two children, and the others who passed in the tragic floods. He even struggled to finished the intro, already choked up at the thought of singing the song.

Towards the end of song, Green encouraged the crowd to “be kind, love one another” and “do things with purpose” before having them help him sing the rest of the song:

“Be kind to one another, love one another, be gentle. Do things with purpose. Let the people around you know exactly what you think about them often. Anyway, I sure hope you had fun with us. Let’s end this thing on a high note. Y’all wanna sing?”

He spoke about the loss of his family members before starting the song, and got visibly emotional throughout the performance, understandably. My heart just breaks for him and his family, especially his little niece, and we continue to pray for them and all of the other families who have been so tragically affected by the devastating floods.
