Country music is doing big numbers “Down Under.”
Australia is truly a fascinating place. I’ve personally never been, and to be honest with you, all of the wild footage I’ve seen from the continent (in addition to the 100-plus poisonous snakes there) doesn’t make me want to go anytime soon. Australians seem to be “built different.”
Though when it comes to their music taste, they’re actually a lot like us Americans.
A new report from Connect by Live Nation found that Australia is now the third largest market in the world for country, finishing behind the United States at one and Canada at two. And the study found that Gen Z (people born between 1997 and 2012) is one of the main driving forces behind that trend in Australia:
“Gen Z in metropolitan areas are leading this incredible surge, with 68 per cent now listening to more country music than ever before due to its seamless genre crossover with pop, rock and hip hop…
67 per cent follow a country music artist on social media, with TikTok recording an impressive 196 million video views on Country Music in Australia over the last 12 months. Ironically, recent data from Spotify shows that 92 per cent of country music streams come from metropolitan areas across the country.”
Country music being carried by populations in the cities of Australia… who would have thought?
The Senior Vice President and Head of Media and Sponsorship at Live Nation Australia & New Zealand – Kristy Rosser – stated that the increase in country music popularity can be attributed to fans discovering the genre for themselves, then subsequently driving growth in adjacent areas:
“What we are seeing is a shift in perception for traditional country music from ‘nostalgic’ and ’emotional’ to ‘on the rise,’ ‘diverse’ and ‘progressive.’ These new fans located in urban areas didn’t grow up with country music, they’ve found it through mainstream channels, influencing their lifestyle preferences and driving growth across the retail, FMCG and entertainment categories.”
The increase in interest in country music has, in turn, helped other industries that are aligned with it – such as retail and ticket sales. As the old saying goes, a rising tide lifts all boats.
Arguably the biggest change in response to Australia’s country music boom is the fact that country artists have started taking their international tours down to the only country in the world that’s also a continent. The report suggests that since 2019, country music ticket sales have seen an almost unfathomable increase:
“From 2019 to 2024, Live Nation has recorded an incredible 746 percent growth in live music tickets sold with no signs of slowing down. This has led to multiple sold-out shows and music artists touring Australia and New Zealand including Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, Post Malone.
And just announced, Jason Aldean, who will headline Australia’s newest country music experience ‘Sunburnt Country’ as part of the international expansion of his ‘FULL THROTTLE’ tour in February 2026.”
Country music artists are always looking to connect with their fans, and since there is a statistically proven boom in the ‘Land Down Under,’ it only makes sense that the likes of Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers are beginning to seek out Australia shows… even if it means challenging travel and potentially being asked to do shoeys.
