HD-4884 is back with a new single, “Fleur à La Mort,” his first official release since a life-threatening incident left him bedridden back in 2022.

The track’s title aptly translates from French to “flower of death,” a concept that arose amid a period of existential dread for the virtuosic producer and visual designer.

“The past three years has been a crucial turning point in my life, experiencing death, losing two of my best friends (my grandparents), the abandonment from my family, the financial hardship of pushing forward creatively, the ups and downs of the world, and worst of all the isolation of social media,” HD-4884 wrote in a candid Instagram post.

“I’ve decided in the past few weeks that because of this and I needed to just be…. Me,” he continues. “The questions of Who am I? Why am I here for? Is this right? The constant chatter of self doubt and isolation… it all needed to stop.”

Hospital beds make unlikely recording studios, but his three-year absence apparently doubled as a masterclass in gothic electronic music.

The haunting “Fleur à La Mort” is out now in collaboration with Crywolf, whose voice could make a grocery list sound apocalyptic. His vocals navigate the production like a scalpel through satin, delivering whispered French lyrics and lines about “lovely beasts” and “bag knives” with casual menace.

Meanwhile, HD-4884’s decision to perform nearly every instrument himself pays dividends in cohesion, creating a spellbinding sound that breathes as one organism. It’s “alt-EDM” that actually earns its hyphen by balancing dancefloor momentum with art-house pretension.

“Fleur à La Mort” is out now via CTRL: Database Research, a new collective and record label launched by HD-4884. You can check out the track’s official visualizer below and find it on streaming platforms here.
