Morgan Wallen dropped his latest project, the 37-song album I’m The Problem, earlier this month, and it’s safe to say it’s already been a massive success. The album debuted at the top of the all-genre Billboard 200 album chart, landed 6 songs in the top 10 of the all-genre Hot 100, and claimed all 10 spots in the top 10 of the Hot Country Songs chart, the first time an artist has swept the top 10 spots.
Oh, and it was also the most-streamed country album of the year within 12 hours of being released.
Just a monster success, regardless of how you feel about Morgan or the album.
Of course the album comes just a year after Morgan was arrested in Nashville for throwing a chair off the rooftop of Eric Church’s downtown bar, Chief’s. Morgan was charged with three felony counts of reckless endangerment, but ultimately pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges and was sentenced to 7 days in a DUI education facility.
After showing up in court back in December, photos from Morgan’s plea hearing immediately became a meme:
But apparently it wasn’t just the internet that got creative with the images from his legal troubles.
During a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s New Music Daily Radio, as reported by Country Now, Morgan revealed that the album cover for I’m The Problem was actually inspired by a courtroom sketch that he saw while meeting with his attorney during his legal saga:
“I saw old school court drawings in there, and at the same time me and my team were talking about, What’s this artwork going to be?’ I’m like, ‘Ah, I’m not really sure.’ And I saw those old school court drawings and something just clicked in my head. I was like, ‘That might be cool.’”
Morgan says that he decided to look into the idea to see if any other artists had already used a courtroom sketch for their album cover. And when he realized that it hadn’t been done before, he decided to go for it – although he didn’t want to use an actual photo of himself from court because it would be “too real.”
“I just wanted to just pay a little bit of homage to that and make people say, ‘Hey, is that what that is?’ I feel like we toed the line of it pretty well, and I think it looks cool.”
Of course a lot’s changed since that night last April when he was arrested. Morgan recently revealed that he hasn’t been in a bar since that night (joking that the last time he was in a bar was the time everyone knew about), and also said that the birth of his son has taught him to be more careful with who he trusts:
I think I learned that lesson a lot. I mean, you’d think I would’ve learned it after one time, but it’s taken me a little more than it should have. But also, there were times when I really didn’t care.
I did whatever I wanted and whatever, but you know, you get older, you have a kid, and you start thinking about how that’s impacting other people and not just yourself. I think whenever he was born, I started really looking at the world that way. Like, man, I gotta be careful who I hang out with, I gotta be careful, you know, these people have a lot of… not everyone is users, but there’s a lot of them.
I’d say the majority are. You learn to be able to distinguish. At this point, I’m gonna assume the worst in everyone, pretty much, to be honest. I mean, that’s just the way it is. I’m gonna assume you’re sh*****, and if you prove me wrong, awesome, but good luck.”
Honestly, that’s a pretty good lesson. At least he got something out of the ordeal…well that, and an album cover. The post Morgan Wallen’s ‘I’m The Problem’ Album Cover Was Inspired By Courtroom Sketches He Saw In His Lawyer’s Office first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
