Man Accused of Assaulting Woman at RÜFÜS DU SOL Concert Arrested

Pasadena police have arrested a 23-year old man in connection with a violent assault at RÜFÜS DU SOL’s August 16th concert at Rose Bowl Stadium.

It’s the latest development after the victim, Shelby Elston, shared on social media that she was ultimately able to identify the perpetrator after he disappeared into the crowd following the assault. In the near-week since the harrowing events came to light, Elston says she has received helpful information from a number of individuals connected to the attacker and intends to press charges.

The suspect, identified as Cesar Lopez Zavala, is accused of beating Elston to the point of her losing consciousness following a dispute over a spilled drink. After she shared a video of the attack, a subsequent social media groundswell emerged as the concert footage went viral. Various tips led police to Zavala, who was taken into custody in Hawthorne on August 21st, NBC Los Angele reports.

Earlier this week, RÜFÜS DU SOL released a statement acknowledging the shocking events that occurred on the final show of their tour. “We have been heartbroken to hear of the act of violence that took place during the opening act on Saturday,” the band said. “This type of behavior is completely unacceptable anywhere and the fact that this happened at one of our shows was devastating to learn about.”

Formal charges against Zavala are now pending review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
