HARDY has been out on the road this year playing concerts all over the country, and he’s gearing up to release a new studio album COUNTRY! COUNTRY! on September 26th.

But this year, he’s added an interesting song choice to his set, a cover of the 1975’s “Love It If We Made It,” which was included on the English rock band’s third studio album, A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships in 2018.

The song was written by frontman Matty Healy, George Daniel, Adam Hann and Ross MacDonald. Using Prince’s “Sign O’ The Times” as inspiration, the song is essentially a protest song of sorts, referencing the US national anthem protests, the death of Alan Kurdi, the death of Lil Peep, and the Donald Trump Access Hollywood tape, Kanye West, among other things.

Hardy released his version as an Amazon Music Exclusive in November of 2024, which changes some of the lyrics, most notably, the part about “suffocating the black men.” Hardy changes the lyric to “red,” a nod to his fellow rednecks. He also changes the bridge, where Healy sings about immigration, fossil fuels and kneeling during the national anthem, to a bridge about how the music industry has fallen victim to TikTok and algorithms.

I thought it was a cool enough cover, though I’m not so sure some of the fans were into it. Hardy has performed it quite often this year, and every time, there’s a number of comments calling it an “anti-Trump” or “anti-Conservative” song.

Including this more recent example from Grand Rapids:

Many were quick to point out the political nature of the song, and how they feel it doesn’t align with what they assume are Hardy’s political beliefs. His wife, Caleigh, has been more outspoken in the past on the fact that the country music is “mostly liberal,” and has called out Maren Morris. And last fall, Hardy delivered a passionate pro-American speech, telling haters to “go live somewhere else.”

So even though they’ve never explicitly said that much about their own political opinions, most fans assume they lean somewhere to the right.

But because this is the internet, many were very upset to hear a country singer like Hardy was singing a song like this (even though he’s been doing it for a while now):

“This song is anti-Trump and anti-conservative but cool ig.”

“Does he… not realize what the song is about…”

“Don’t think Matty would like this.”

“So does he sing the Anti-Trump part?”

“Is Hardy a Trump supporter? Boygenius praised him so if so, yikes.”

“I don’t think he should sing this song.”

“Did the entire first verse and bridge not register to him.”

“Does he know what this is about or what.”

“This is such an anti-Trump anthem so not only does he look foolish but it sounds bad LOL.”

“Matty Healy would hate this.”

“The lyric changes are… something. Changing the lyrics to make your MAGA fans happy takes away the impact of the song lol.”

“The lyrics going right over his head.”

I’m sure Hardy understands what the song is about, as evidenced by the fact that he did change some lyrics. But he’s also an extremely skilled songwriter, are you trying to tell me he doesn’t understand songs?

Nevertheless, I still find the song to be more of a critique of our fallen society, an indictment of technology and the attention economy, and this newfound unwillingness to accept objective truth, as opposed to a blanket, anti-Republican anthem. Of course, the irony is not lost on me… a song that hints at this modern world of outrage culture, sparking more… outrage culture.

Make no mistake, Matt Healy is undoubtedly left leaning, and a critic of Donald Trump, but I think we can all look around right now and agree that things haven gotten out of control. Of course, it’s always sorta funny hearing that from a Brit…

You can actually hear Matt break the entire song down:
