Yellowstone fans were understanably confused when they learned that Kayce Dutton would get his own spinoff after he had his “ride off into the sunset moment” on the flagship series.

There was initially speculation that CBS had great interest in bringing back Luke Grimes, the actor-turned-country-singer, to be the main character. And just a couple of months ago, the show apparently didn’t have many plot details etched into stone… though it was well on it’s way to being green lit.

Then the return of Kayce Dutton became official.

Variety reported that CBS had given a 13-episode order for a program called “Y: Marshals,” and Luke Grimes – A.K.A. Kayce Dutton – has been attached to the project. Yellowstone fans know well that one of the main character qualities of Kayce, the youngest of the Dutton siblings, was his prior military experience – specifically as a Navy SEAL. Based on the show’s proposed log line, it appears the series will explore his trained skillset a bit more:

“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

So there you have it.

How does Luke Grimes feel about the opportunity with “Y: Marshals?” Well, when he recently spoke to People about the spinoff, it certainly seems like the actor was just happy to be able to play Kayce Dutton for a little bit longer:

“On the last day of shooting (Yellowstone), I thought it was my last day as Kayce. It was over to me. It was seven years of playing a person that I’ll never see again, except for having his hat and jacket in my closet. It wasn’t until probably three or four months after that that everything started aligning for the (spinoff)… finally came along a really good idea.”

Sounds like the fact that he was presented with a solid spinoff idea played a big role in Grimes deciding to come back.

There was also the fact that… apparently no one actually wanted Yellowstone to come to an end. The fans didn’t want it. The TV executives likely didn’t want it. Hell, as Luke Grimes puts it, even the actors and actresses working on the show wanted it to keep going. Makes you wonder why they couldn’t make that happen?

Here’s what Grimes had to say about the matter:

“Nobody wanted it to be over. I don’t think the fans wanted it to be over. A lot of us actors kind of didn’t want it to be over, and the studio and network certainly didn’t want it to be over…

To try to put that show away, it was hard. It was really hard, and I know this is going to sound weird, but it was sort of emotional. It was like losing a family in a way.”

Fans felt the same way.

And it certainly seems like the man behind Kayce Dutton had made peace with hanging up the cowboy hat. That is until Grimes received an idea for a spinoff that actually made sense, and furthered the character development of Kayce Dutton. It took some convincing, but Grimes got on board… mainly because he thinks it’ll really land with fans:

“If it was just like, ‘well, he’s happy’ – we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool. But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”

COME ON WITH IT.

Though I know a lot of Yellowstone fans would love to flip on their TV and watch Y: Marshals tonight, we do have to wait a bit for the return of Kayce Dutton. Filming for Y: Marshals is projected to start this Fall, with an confirmed release date of early 2026.

So until then, we’ll have to cue up the greatest hits:
