Luke Combs Releases Highly Anticipated “My Kinda Saturday Night” In New Three-Song EP, “The Prequel”
Luke Combs is BACK. Over the past two years, there’s been plenty of discussion on Comb’s current state in country music. Luke Combs is BACK.
Over the past two years, there’s been plenty of discussion on Comb’s current state in country music. It should go without saying that the “Beautiful Crazy” singer has remained one of the premier acts currently working today, arguably second only to the likes of Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan. With that being said, however, many have expressed the fact that they felt as if Combs has lost a step recently.
After the release of Fathers & Sons last year, which provided a quiet, introspective look into Combs’ continued journey into fatherhood, there were rumblings about when the North Carolina native would return to the rocking sound he scored hits with on the likes of “1, 2 Many,” “Beer Never Broke My Heart” and “She Got the Best of Me.”
Back in July, he made his triumphant return to the sound so many were wanting upon the release of “Back in the Saddle,” which served as a reminder that he’s the same artist that everyone fell in love with back in 2016 upon the release of “Hurricane.”
Today, he’s back again with a preview of his upcoming album on the new three-song EP, “The Prequel.”
If you recall, Combs did the exact same thing all the way back in 2019 five months before the release of his sophomore album, What You See Is What You Get, when he dropped a five-song EP, also titled The Prequel, which contained the likes “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” “Even Though I’m Leaving” and “Lovin’ On You.”
This time around, the 35-year-old singer/songwriter is previewing his untitled album, which is slated to be released early next year, with the release of the highly anticipated “My Kinda Saturday Night” along with two previously teased tracks, “15 Minutes” and “Days Like These,” a song first previewed acoustically all the way back in 2023.
Given the popularity of “My Kinda Saturday Night” upon its first teaser, I would be remiss not to talk about it. Simply put, it’s Combs in his sweet spot. Feeling like a certified ’90s honky tonk throwback, the track has all the makings of a #1 hit. It’s a fairly straightforward track, complete with boots stomping on 2x4s, beer slamming and tailgates dropping. With all of that being said, it serves as a reminder that Combs can still deliver massive crowd-pleasers that will play incredibly well at his concerts. Make no mistake, this is a rock-solid tailgate anthem through and through.
As for “Days Like These,” he delivers a beautiful ballad about enjoying the simplicities of life with his wife, Nicole. Feeling reminiscent of Chris Stapleton’s “Millionaire,” Combs notes how money can’t buy the happiness found in the titular, “days like these.”
Finally, “15 Minutes” takes Combs to a place he’s never ventured yet as an artist: inside the walls of prison. Framed as a phone call to his mother, he grapples with his mortality while serving a life sentence for an unnamed crime. Pondering whether both Jesus and his father will ever forgive him for his sins, the North Carolina native reflects on his life behind bars in the stellar track.
Ultimately, The Prequel serves as a reminder to fans of Combs that he’s back and really never left. Going a perfect three for three with dramatically different tones throughout each song, the “Hurricane” singer is gearing up for what very well could be his best album to date next year.
