If the whole music thing didn’t work out, Willie Nelson might’ve had a career in comedy.

This week, Willie’s incredibly talented son Lukas Nelson stopped by comedian Bert Kreischer’s Bertcast podcast, where they of course talked music, Lukas’ recent American Romance album and of course, what it was like to grow up with Willie Nelson as a father.

Lukas talked about how special it is when they get to sing onstage together, and noted how special their duet of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” will always be to him, which they also recently performed together at Farm Aid:

“Man, the best thing in life is being with him onstage playing. We play a lot together. We did, I’m so glad we did this, we did a Pearl Jam song together called ‘Just Breathe,’ and did a video for it back years ago.

And I love that we’ll have that for the rest of our lives together. I’ll always have that with him. I love that I’ll have him, and his voice, with me forever.”

They went onto to talk about how Lukas first got into music in order to be with his dad more, because Willie would so often be gone on tour, and Lukas actually started playing in Willie’s band at just 13-years-old:

“He is a legend. Man, that guy is out on the road right now. That’s the thing, too, now the only hard part is that our schedule bring us apart. Because back when I was a kid, I would play with him. I played in his band, I started playing in his band when I was really young, like 13.

And I loved it, because that’s what brought me closer to him. Because I’d be sad, he’d be gone all the time, and I’d be missing him. But then, that’s kind of why I started playing music, was just to get closer to him.”

But the best part was when Lukas told Bert about how funny his dad is, which has always been the case and I think part of what makes his music ad writing so incredible, but what I had never heard before is that Willie started teaching his son dirty jokes at just six-years-old… I’m guessing mom didn’t know about that one:

“I think comedy right now is what’s saving the planet. The ability to laugh brings people together. And we need to be able to talk and laugh about things. Everything under the sun, there should be nothing sacred. But I just really believe that.

I grew up telling the dirtiest… my dad told me the dirtiest jokes ever. He taught me a limerick when I was 6… I learned that when I was six years old, man. So my dad is a funny guy too, by the way. I’ve heard all his jokes now, but sometimes we tell each other jokes.

But comedy is it, it’s everything. Laughing is one f the great reasons why life is worth living, is so we can laugh.”

Amen to that… but it’s still funny to think about a young Lukas walking around repeating his dad’s jokes like this:

Hey, when you’re the son of a legend like Willie, that just comes with the territory…

And if you’ve never heard Willie and Lukas’ “Just Breathe” duet, you’re really missing out:
