‘Landman’ Co-Creator Spills What’s In Store For Billy Bob Thornton’s Character, Tommy Norris, In Season 2

The air date for Landman season 2 is nearing, and we fans are getting anxious to see what’s in store for MTex Oil’s future.

If you haven’t seen Season 1 and don’t want anything spoiled, this is your official warning to stop reading, as we will be recapping the events that concluded Season 1. I REPEAT, IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO READ ANY SPOILERS: DO NOT CONTINUE.

In the intense Season 1 finale, we saw the future of MTex Oil was rocky after their fearless leader, Monty, played by John Hamm, dies, and the introduction of the drug kingpin Galliano, played by Andy Garcia. After Monty’s death due to a heart attack, Tommy Norris is tagged as the new executive for the company.

With the cartel’s kingpin entering the finale as well, it sets up the possibility that they will have a stake in MTex Oil this next season, or Norris will organize some mutually beneficial agreement for both the cartel and the oil company.

However, with Tommy Norris taking on this new executive role, his life will change from oil fields to boardrooms, which feels like a significant shift from the character’s rough-around-the-edges day-to-day life. However, it seems that Tommy might not be in the boardroom as one might think. Landman‘s co-creator and executive producer spilled some secrets about the upcoming season in a recent interview with TV Line.

Wallace tells fans to think about what Tommy Norris enjoys about the job and consider how he can incorporate that fieldwork into his new role.

Well, the thing about Tommy is: He likes the guys. He likes being involved in the day-to-day operations, at least to an extent. There are some days that I think he wishes he could never look at another pumpjack again. But it’s also part of what’s in his blood and what drives him to get up every day.

In this new role, he clearly will have to spend more time in boardrooms and at fancy dinners. I think you can take Tommy out of the patch to an extent, but not fully.”

It sounds like Billy Bob Thornton knows that his character will be in and out of the oil fields still, telling TV Line at the end of season one:

“Tommy is never going to get the landman out of him. I mean, that’s who he is. He does not want to be an executive guy. I don’t think he wants to be in the suit, but I believe he’ll do whatever it takes.”

Billy Bob Thornton also shared that, unlike season 1, the cast got to read some of the script before filming began. This is an uncommon move for Taylor Sheridan, who often keeps the script he writes close to his chest until filming begins. Although it sounded like Thornton doesn’t know how the season ends, given that he got a preview of what’s in store for his character, it makes me wonder if he’s going to undergo some significant character changes and needs more time to get familiar with the new corporate side of this character.

Either way, I’m excited to see what’s in store for the future of MTex Oil, Tommy Norris, and the other colorful characters of Landman. Landman is set to return in December of this year for its second season on Paramount+.
