The next chapter of Koe Wetzel is HERE.
Koe Wetzel is hoping to escape the memory of an ex-lover, yet can’t seem to outrun it with his new single “Surrounded.” Coming off the heels of his commercially successful record 9 Lives, which scored Wetzel his first number one country radio hit, “High Road,” Wetzel is keeping the roll going with “Surrounded.”
Wetzel first performed the song at an Audacy Totally Private concert in Nashville back in February. Fans were instantly drawn to the acoustic number, which was then taken to a larger stage as Koe began incorporating it into his setlists. Because Koe was previewing “Surrounded,” we asked him if he knew that would be the first single since 9 Lives when he sat down for an episode of Whiskey Riff Raff. Wetzel was confident that “Surrounded” would be what they led off with.
“I think that’s what we are going to do for the first single. We just finished up the last mix of it, so it’s off at mastering right now. So we are getting pretty close with it. I’m excited about that song.
We’ve got 3 or 4 other ones that we’ve kind of debated on throwing out first, but ‘Surrounded’ just feels really good for us right now. Especially coming off ‘9 Lives,’ we didn’t want to get too crazy with something different. We kind of wanted to give the listeners a familiar sound that they’re familiar with. So, ‘Surrounded’ felt that way.”

Building off the sound established on 9 Lives is precisely what “Surrounded” does. Wetzel keeps that gritty Texas rock ‘n roll sound as the focal point of the melody. While it’s a tried-and-true heartbreaker, the way Wetzel describes feeling trapped inside his own memories reveals the maturity and growth he’s undergone as an individual, which was highlighted prominently on 9 Lives.
Co-written with Josh Serrato and Ashley Gorley, the song highlights the double meaning of being “Surrounded” both physically and mentally, as Koe feels trapped in every sense of the word following a breakup where he can’t seem to outrun his ex-lover’s memory, especially when he’s drinking:
“I can’t run out, I can’t fight it
I can’t think ’cause my head’s so clouded
Every morning, every night is
All alone, but the room feels crowded
Should’ve took all the mirrors you left
Cause I’m drunk and I can’t be around it
Hands up, we’ve got this house surrounded
And there’s nothing I can do about it.”
The build-up of the melody throughout the chorus for the hard stops as he delivers the final lines of the chorus hooks you in as a listener, creating a song that you’ll quickly put on repeat. Koe Wetzel does not miss, and “Surrounded” sounds like another hit for the Texas native.
Turn this one all the way up.
